Vilander Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 "I think that part for me is still burning bright. I am going to play for CSK and don't be surprised if I aspire to play for as long as I can," Ashwin said. "I don't think Ashwin the cricketer is done, I think only Ashwin the Indian cricketer called time. That's it." https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/r-ashwin-says-he-has-no-regrets-about-retiring-from-international-cricket-1465876?platform=amp

I never thought a Tamil Nadu guy could play this long for India as it’s not normally seen. I think only the third player from Tamil Nadu after Srikanth and Murali Vijay to have a reasonably long and steady career with team India. Many others have had short stints or start stop careers - DK, L Balaji, Nattu, Badri, Vijay Shankar, Badani come to mind. Not sure how long Venkatraghavan and LSRK played. Hoping for good careers for the three players of next gen - Sai Sudarshan, Sai Kishore and Washington

vvvslaxman Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 @Gollum @bowl_out@Vicks57 @rollingstoned @velu Anyone saw Pdogg video and an anecdote about Ashwin? He has shared an incident that happened during INdia vs SA series. For others who don't understand Tamil. They used to go out for dinner every night during the Test series. Pdogga was the SA analyst back then. One day Ashwin didn't show up. He didn't call or inform anything. Pdogg checked if he was okay. Actually he was not okay. He was running fever. Reason Ashwin didn't share this with pdogg was that he didn't want Pdogg to use that as part of the strategy against India. Vicks57, rollingstoned, velu and 5 others 1 7

Retirements should have people asking Why rather than When Few days back (before Ashwin retirement) there was an X trend "retire" targeting Rohit and Kohli. That is not when you retire. In a way i am glad he has done it now. Looking at the schedule his selection is going to be inconsistent. At the most he would play 2 or 3 tests. That's it. He will be 39 by then.

Hoping for good careers for the three players of next gen - Sai Sudarshan, Sai Kishore and Washington Venkatraghavan played 57 tests...he was the primary spinner when Ajit Wadekar was captaining. He could have played more...but Pataudi was more in favour of Erapalli Prasanna (who played 49 Tests). BTW...I don't think Sai Kishore will get many chances. Manav Suthar seems more skillful with the ball...then there is Nishant Sindhu who is a very good batsman. Edited December 21, 2024 by singhvivek141

But let us face it without batting skills spinners won't find a spot. He does have skils. But below the level of Sindhu. Having said that we cannot discard him totally based on that. He is the tallest of all the spinners we have. So he will get extra bounce.
