And then there was Prithvi Shaw

From the same "batch" as Gill.

Made his debut about a year earlier than Gill.

Batted well, including a 50+ in tough NZ conditions.

Dropped after the 36 a.o. Adelaide match, never to be seen again in tests.

Important lesson: For many, just making it into the Indian team is the destination. They feel like they can cruise after that. Never works out that way.

Should not have been dropped. Was made a scapegoat for 36 A.O.

True.

But, from all accounts, he doesn't seem to have helped himself.  With a little bit of discipline and application, he could have forced his way back in with performances. He is young and has the ability, for sure.

Karun Nair has come back. So there  are always ways you can make a come back. But so far he has not done that.

IPL - mhe

First class - mhe

List A - mhe

Yes. But young kids can take such sacking differently, specially after being hyped all their life. Of course blame lies with him for turning to alcohol

At almost 26 years old, he is no young kid. Temperament and discipline is the most important aspect for an International cricketer...

He still has time at his hand, but not really positive if anything will come out of it!

Talking about when he was dropped. Now it's a lost case

Ayush Mhatre could be next Prithvi Shaw going by his technical flaws getting exposed in the U19 series.

Something didn't seem right with his batting even at IPL.  Technically pretty weak batter.

That Angkrish Raghuvanshi otoh has test credentials in him.

Rutu and Shaw in the same team .. may be he will play for CSK and get the CSK quota to get back in ..

it will be interesting to see Shaw , Mathre , Rutu , brevis in the same line up ..

Yes but he has been pushed out of lower levels and franchise cricket too.

I hope there's a redemption story in there somewhere. A mentor or someone who can help him turn him around.

Too much talent to compete with. Will be a backward move

Didn't take the sacking in a right way.

Last represented India in July 2021.

Went unsold at IPL 2025 auction.

Can only live off past glories/potential for so long. Shaw is not even part of the conversation.

Prithvi Shaw breaks silence on switching from Mumbai to Maharashtra: 'Being part of progressive setup...'

Prithvi Shaw will look for a fresh slate to try and reboot his dwindling career, joining Maharashtra in domestic cricket.

Despite an extended stint away from the spotlight at the highest level of Indian cricket, the future of Prithvi Shaw’s career remains a matter of great interest to fans given his status as one of the most promising and talented batters as a youngster. Shaw is on a determined hunt for rejuvenation and another shot at the top, which has led him to swap Mumbai for Maharashtra in domestic cricket.

After receiving a no-objection certificate from Mumbai Cricket Association last month to ply his trade for a different state board, Shaw won’t have to travel far as Maharashtra Cricket Association confirmed the 25-year-old will join the team captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad in state level cricket.

"At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer. I am deeply grateful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the opportunities and support I have received over the years," Shaw said in a statement after his switch.

‘Play alongside players like Ruturaj Gaikwad…’

Shaw went on to explain that a big reason for why he thinks the switch will benefit him is the ‘progressive setup’ that Maharashtra cricket can promise, without the weight and expectation that comes with being a cricketer in Mumbai. Shaw has recently lost out on his place in the Ranji team to the likes of up-and-comer Ayush Mhatre, and Maharashtra provides him a fresh slate with less pressure to immediately perform.

"I'm confident that being part of such a progressive setup will positively impact my journey as a cricketer. I’m happy to get the opportunity to play alongside talented players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Rajneesh Gurbani, and Mukesh Choudhary in the Maharashtra team,” said Shaw of the players he looked forward to finding himself again around.

Shaw was released by Delhi Capitals after the 2024 IPL season, and hasn’t participated in international cricket in nearly 4 years. However, still at 25, time is on Shaw’s side in terms of getting his fitness and mental approach to the game back on track.

"We are delighted to welcome a player of Prithvi Shaw’s calibre to the Maharashtra team. His inclusion adds tremendous strength to an already talented squad comprising experienced players…” said Maharashtra Cricket president Rohit Pawar, looking forward to the move. “Shaw’s international and IPL experience will be invaluable, especially for mentoring younger players in the squad.”
