Obviously not. In any case before officially retiring he had been opting out of series and games quite often based on his personal preferences. Fair enough but that is already a farewell and the TM indulged him for too long by accomodating the preferences of a non performing player.

In the wider scheme of things in Indian test cricket, he will go down more for the impact he had as a captain rather than as a legendary batsman.  He peaked at a high level around 2017/2018 but overall he doesn't stand comparison with Sachin, SMG etc purely as a era defining batsman.

But Root and Williamson played on flat pitches compared to Kohli that's why they performed better and Kohli batted on difficult wickets that's why his performance becomes bad.

If you want a farewell series, you should aim to retire on a high, not when there is a feeling of you being accommodated. Ideally, the concept of farewell series is outdated considering the talent pool available, therefore, players have to time it when they are on their way down but still find a place in the team to go out on a relative high.

That was a team call and call was made by Kohli and Ravi Shastri. In 2021 Feb when England came to India, India actually prepared a flat pitch or typical subcontinental pitch in the first test. England as usual won the toss and elected to bat. Root scored a double hundred and England scored 500 plus. India fresh from Gabba win played like millionaires in first innings and lost the test as ball started to spin in second innings. While Ollie Pope wad batting in Englands second innings Kohli walked up to him and said.. its over.. whatever runs you wanna make, make it here.. next all tests you wont make any as rank turners coming and rest is history.. india started making rank turners.. beat all and sundry till it came to a screeching halt against NZ..

No. When your overstay your welcome, you don't deserve such farewell. He kept failing and failing in last 5 years with similar patterns of dismissals. There was zero effort to rectify mistakes by playing FC or county cricket. He was lucky he played for those 5 years, could easily have his career cut short in 2024 itself. Top that with reports of not traveling with the team, staying in different hotels etc. As big a superstar he is, in a team sport that's unacceptable.

Virat deserves a farewell game, but only in ODI, which is his best format.

 

In Tests, he struggled for a long time and was completely out of touch, did not bother to fix his glaring technical issues, but still remained in the team because of superstar status and PR. He was never a great Test player and just had a good patch in the mid-late 2010s.

 

If anyone deserved a farewell Test, it is Ashwin and Pujara, they contributed a lot to Indian Test cricket and their value is more than that of Virat's.

Nah, based on how he did against NZ and Aus, no reason to think he was better than Sai or Karun. Guy stopped working on his flaws, kept getting out the same way, even on these flat pitches, he wouldn't have had the hunger to go big.

Once you mentally check out, can't perform no matter how much the odds are stacked in your favor. After losing captaincy, he was playing test cricket as if he was doing a favor to the team, would drop out of the squads at short notice for no reason whatsoever, missed 15 odd tests just in the last 5 years, and not due to injury.

 

Anyhow no need of farewell drama in a team sport.

Kohli couldnt score zilch in indian pitches against nz where Sarfraz khan, rishabh pant all scored runs. He was playing the wrong line to aijaz and santner time and again. He would have been nicked out in England as well.
