Kohli, Pujara, Rahane, Pant, Jadeja failed miserably averaging 20-30, only Rohit and KL did well. No support for Root but he managed 600 runs in those 4 tests against Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Thakur. Eng pitches got flatter only from 2022. Root did score on difficult pitches 3-4 years back. But last 20 tests or so, he is scoring only on pattas. Kohli also had his moments while scoring on difficult tracks. But same can't be case when most of the time it's difficult to bat. Root is better batsman but even great ones rely on 75% good inning on pattas along with 25% knocks on difficult conditions. When you remove opportunity of that 75%, it looks really difficult.
Trichromatic Posted January 7 Posted January 7 11 minutes ago, Gollum said: But Eng pitches were quite tough during Anderson-Broad era, which overlaps with most of Root's career. He made plenty of runs then as well, just that his conversion has become better post pandemic. I recall Root scoring big 100s in 2021 Lanka on rank turners. He has 24 centuries in last 5 years.

Ultimately 3 formats(+RCB) overload and captaincy pressure.....took a huge mental toll on him. Shelf life for Indian captains is 5 years, usually downhill after that. Smith, Root, KW never had that much white ball workload, and even though they too were captains, that role is not as draining in SENA countries. Also, they had more well-rounded techniques for test cricket especially Root and KW. Smith anyway is weird, more of a freak, I still have no idea how he has achieved so much....his methods can't be emulated by others. Successfully remaining a captian for 5+ years is an exception and not the rule in international cricket. Even in 1 format it becomes too much to deal with as personal performance tends to suffer. Dil pe pathar rakh ke I support Manju for once You can't carry a dad's army to the world cup. Jadeja needs to go along with one of Rohit or Kohli. I'm leaning towards keeping Rohit and slot in Si at 3 - he did great last time he batted in SA at no. 3 spot. Also want to see the end of KL but no decent ODI wk option. Maybe Pant can be tried again but he hasn't looked the same since his accident. Before his accident he was looking better in ODIs.

But Rohit is 1.5 years elder to Virat. And historically he is the one who has had fitness issues. Backup opener bhi hai apne paas, in Jaiswal and Ruturaj. But we will never get another #3 like VK. Overall, I think Root has done better on tough pitches than Kohli. Pre-2022 English pitches were really tough, tailor-made for Anderson-Broad. Even at his peak, Kohli's no-show in 2017 BGT is a black mark against his record. Kane mama scores on tough pitches but not against the best teams. Smith is in a different league compared to his peers. Quality of his runs, context/match situation when they come, % of them resulting in wins etc. are unbelievable. In last 2 Ashes in Eng, Aus have won 4 tests and Smith has 4 100s in those wins. Another of his 100s in Eng came in the WTC final against us when they were inserted to bat and 70/3 in 1st session of day 1. In 25 WTC F, again a 66 on day 1 when they were in trouble. In the recent WI series, he had a 50 and 70 on treacherous pitches. Edited January 7 by Gollum

I can see Rohit play a blinder in a knockout the way he played in CT Final but Kohli isn't going to do much based on his ICC tourney record in ODIs. I would rather take a punt on a 25 ball 40 from Rohit in a knockout than trust Kohli or KL Rahul.

goose Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I can’t be arsed to do a proper analysis but for a good chunk of those 5 years kohli was the best or second best bat in the side on tough wickets / low totals root and smith have both suffered potentially career ending slumps so yeh lots of time for this opinion
Talkie Posted January 7 Posted January 7 He can prioritize whatever he wants. Manjrekar has no right to question. One can criticize performance but why going personal?

In the end people will see Root with 15k runs at avg of 15 and Kohli 9.5k at avg of 46 and both will appear in completely different leagues, but difference wasn't this wide. Technically Kohli is inferior batsman than all 4, but his output used to be high due to his application. That advantage was heavily neutralized with heavy usage of bowling friendly pitches.
