I reckon he may give up captaincy or retire altogether very soon. He won't let the selectors take the final call.

captaincy has a shelf life and all the great captains who overstayed had the ignominy of leading their sides to multiple defeats. Dhoni should have resigned the captaincy after the world cup

Not trying to get caught up b/w Dhoni lovers and Dhoni haters but I think that there should be a cap on the tenure of a captain - may be 6 to 8 years unless for exceptional performance. It should be applicable when Kohli takes over too. 

Because as time goes by, the captain tends to lose his ability to come up with new ideas, select the right players, etc. The cricketing performance tends to go down as time goes by so at times even creating a situation where people question the place of the captain in the team. A cap on captaincy tenure will also ensure that there is a smoother transition and the player is able to refocus his attention on his cricketing performance as well

This point has become even more acute in recent times because there are effectively four types of captaincies involved...tests, ODIs, T20 I s and Domestic T20 leagues like the IPL.

It is not humanly possible to be a player and a captain across all 4 formats for 7 years plus ....there is bound to be massive mental fatigue from overwork and pressure of delivering constantly.

I don't think it is just the tenure which was the problem. Dhoni is/was in the unique position of being one of the most powerful superstar as well as the captain of the team. The only other person who had such power was Sachin but since he wasn't captain, he could only influence his own selection. Dhoni can influence team and strategy selection as well because of his status. Someone like Dravid or Kumble would not have been in this position even after 10 years.

You missed the point of this thread - the point is, in a game where Dhoni hardly did anything wrong, the baccha-party hate-dhoni brigade still chose to focus on him as the problem, not the actual problems of poor bowling execution, critical fielding mistakes, and a need to re-visit batting strategy in the 2nd half of and ODI innings.  Point of this thread is not to justify Dhoni, or glorify him - he is what he is, in the tail-end of his career.  Too many posters are succumbing to confirmation bias and habitual bashing, instead of objectively looking at the team and its performances.  That's what this thread's sarcasm was aimed against.  

It doesn't matter much anyway, because the ones with red mist in their eyes against Dhoni, will see "dhoni lovers" lurking behind every post that doesn't crucify him.

2007 Exit was the best one till date 

 

Pretty sure any captain could have won the 2011 WC at home. SL and Pak were the only contenders and we were better. 2007 WC was overseas and we all know what Dhoni's team does overseas
