Should have rested the 'Rat?

For 1st 3 ODIs, Should have rested the 'Rat? At least rest him for the last 2.

'Rat anchored and led the chase, so what's new? He is a recognized expert.

It was exciting to see some new and some 'improved' faces in bowling, we should have thrust the responsibility of batting to Rohit Sharma, Rahane, Manish Pandey, Jadhav, MS Dhoni. So, we can allow some of the newer ones like MP and KJ (and even Axar Patel) situations where they have to make it work for India.

Kohli can come back for England.

If we win all 3 odi rest rohit n virat both or else no one wud get a chance to bat. IF they even do they wont be tested entirely

NZ batted terribly today, but they are not really a weak ODI team. They reached the World Cup Final, remember? With many of our first choice players already injured, I think we need to have Virat. NZ likely to fight back.

But they played all their matches in NZ, remember? The first time they were tested in foreign conditions, they failed miserably...

 

Still think it would have been a good final had SA got there instead of NZ.. They were the only side capable of beating Aus on home turf

Totally agree.. And I thought that was going to happen.. Virat should have played down the order and rescued the team in case of a collapse.. With him and Rohit batting in the top 3, the new guys barely get tested.. We should be less stubborn with batting line-ups, particularly in familiar home conditions

Ideally, but who would you have played in the squad? Jayant Yadav or Dhawal Kulkarni? Selectors haven't really selected many batsmen for this ODI series.

No, no. I am not saying MSD should have rested Kohli. I am saying - selectors should have rested Kohli and selected another youngster batsman - give some real world stressful match situations to the youngsters like Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Kedhar Jadhav, maybe even Sanju Samson.

It's hard to rest any player, especially since there were only 8 ODIs before the CT. We don't want our key players out of practice in the format. 

 

It sucks Rahul got injured, we may have to throw him into the team without much ODI match practice.

Agree. We will need our main players to do well in the coming IPL for practice, but some of our ODI players are poor T20 IPL/don't get selected players like Dhawan and Shami( who can't get a game usually).

LOL. Without Kohli, we would have lost today. Can't underestimate Kiwis in LOIs.

Yes, it is possible we may lose without Kohli in chases. But that's the whole point. Need to allow others to experience managing a chase, and eventually winning it without Kohli. It's a one-man show otherwise, and if Kohli goes - then the match goes.

That's a different story - whether to bench a batsman to test out our bench strength in a series that is yet to be decided. The post that I quoted was trying to imply that NZ is a poor team outside NZ. In ODIs, they are pretty competitive even outside their country.
