Look at South Africa just bundling out Aussies for 85..man to man Are Philander and Abbott that much better than Shami,Yadav and Ishant?

7 wickets to catching/ run out in the Aussie innings...I believe we dropped those many catches in our first innings.

We keep saying this bowler is crap that bowler is useless but if we keep dropping catches, what is the point.

Slip catching, Yes,  surely they are better,  but I also have to mention that as good as Shami has been so far, we can not say he is better than South African bowlers as he hasn't had a chance to bowl consistently due to him breaking down with injuries regularly.

Abbott, Morkel, Philander, Rabada and great Steyn are still better than any bowling attack in the world.

All those above mentioned names have been better than even the current pace sensation Mitchell Starc who has been pretty ordinary so far in his test career. He has had great last one year in ODI which he needs to bring into his test game. He showed it in Sri Lanka tour but now has to repeat it at home.

If infact you pick a current test playing 11, an all South African pace bowling attack will be huge favorite in being selected.

Agreed. It is difficult to get excellent slip fielders in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The grounds here are rough and diving is not advisable as it can lead to injuries.

I think thats the thing of the past...we have very very good outfield in our stadiums
problem is that there wont be many slip catches coming in domestic cricket  due to slow pitches....very crucial for building confidence for real match situation...net practice cant be an alternative

True. These guys practice slip catching to seamers more than anyone as they have pitches which provide lot of edges to the fast bowlers back in South Africa. They grow up with that mentality of working on their fielding and slip catching to seamers.

Indian fielders practice for slip catching too, but more for spinners which would involve different kind of catching like standing close and catching. There is a major difference between slip catching practice to spinners and standing back and practicing slip catching for a fast bowler. This is what our players don't do much or just that Saffers do more of.

Yeah. India's fielding is extremely limited-overs oriented. All of a sudden, what we lacked in the 90s, we have in over-abundance: tremendous ground fielders who can take catches in the deep /covers etc.
We've never been a good close-catching team ever, with always 2-3 players who'd regularly drop dollies throughout the team. But we did hit a bit of a golden patch with our catching form the late 90s-mid 2000s, when we had Azhar, Dravid,Laxman, Sehwag was excellent close catchers.

We simply do not have good close-range catchers and that glaring weakness will be a problem.

You must be kidding to compare Vernon to Shami and Yadav. He does not have the pace but he has consistency of bowling ball after ball on same spot.He can swing and seam.

Philander cannot swing as he bowls with wobbly seam.  He can only seam the ball.

See ball to Adam Voges bowled with upright seam . He does not bowl banana out-swingers but he does swing enough.

true.

in another thread i said that even if we give citizenship to starc and rabada and bring them to india... still it is rahane and co who will drop the catches here. i think all our batsmen were point, covers fielders in first class level.. rahane, rohit, kohli are all point and extra point fielders... vijay is deep fielder... i think thats our badluck... as we have seen with vvs and dravid, when batsmen come with a lot of experience in the slips from the first class, they come well prepared

the fact that gavaskar is still pointing mistakes about how they are not bending enough (27-32 year old cricketers) shows that these guys just dont have enough experience in the slips in their teenage, early 20s during the first class phase

I think Shami has had only one major injury break after international debut...which was quite long.

We batted 3 more overs than England, but finished 50 runs short.  That's the discipline difference in the field IMO.  England may have gotten the toss advantage on the batting front, but they have been more disciplined in this test.  Something to learn from for our young team.
