So you would choose Patel a specialist opening batsman who has Test  avg 33.76 with 0 test centuries 6 fifties who has had 16 yrs to get better since debut against Saha specialist wicketkeeper with  Test avg 30.63 with 3 centuries and 6 fifties .

What will 3 runs per innings and poorer wicketkeeping bring to the party?

you mean Saha just skipped the years between 16 and 32 ?

The gap in their batting is far bigger than "3" runs per innings .

Maturity won't be able to take all the catches he drops and all those stumpings he misses. He matured as a batsman not as a keeper.

Honest question , I havent seen him keep for a while .

is it really as bad as its mad out to be ?Does he drop catches in IPL and Ranji regularly ?

Yes. He also missed regularly in his last Test assignment. He even managed to repeatedly gather balls uncleanly during the Ranji QF between Bengal and Gujarat -- on a pitch where the bowling-heavy Bengal line-up plundered a lead close to 700

I don't remember Saha debuting in 2002, Patel did not improve as a specialist opening batsman / wicketkeeper

Some of us do have very short term memory like our captain. In the Mohali and Chennai test against Eng when Parthiv made his comeback as keeper, this is what happened:

Mohali:

46.4 Ashwin to Bairstow, no run, a loose drive and was that an edge? Certainly a stumping chance, but Bairstow slides his toe back as Parthiv fumbles. Snicko confirms a thin edge in that missed chance from Parthiv

83.3 J Yadav to Bairstow, no run, is it dropped?. Patel again. This is an offbreak that doesn't turn. Bairstow defends for the turn, but it goes with the angle and takes the edge. Kisses Patel's glove and hits him on the thigh

Bairstow went on to score 89

Chennai:
7.5 Ashwin to Cook, no run, edged and dropped! Parthiv can't hold the chance. Cook pushed forward at an offbreak that pitched on middle, the dip made the ball pitch well in front of the bat and the turn away from the left-hander took the outside edge. Parthiv moved to his left but the ball brushed the gloves and fell in front of slip. Had Parthiv not moved his hands to his left, that ball would have gone straight to Kohli at slip

Cook went on to score 49

Not just missed chances, generally his keeping was quite shoddy with many byes and stuff if you had seen the matches. Thank god those matches were in India so the opposition couldn't run away with the match. But Dhawan's single drop in 1st innings ensured SA getting to 280 and not 220 or so, which was the difference in the game.

Sorry, Parthiv is not a reliable keeper. If you wanna play Parthiv play him as a specialist bat, he will definitely score more than Dhawan and Rohit as he is a good player against pacers.

IPL its hard to judge keeping and I haven't watched ranji to see how he kept. I am making my observations solely on the England series. Refer to @Forever Indian post on the missed chances. Apart from the drop catches and missed stumpings, he also gives away byes. The last thing we need is a keeper who also drops catches like his slip fielders. And his bat isn't good enough to offset those runs he give away.

Played 2 tests against England last year...dropped a bunch of catches...

That's more than enough to know about him...

I don't mind him as a pure batsman but as a wk/bat...hell no.

The crux of the article is pretty much spot on .

We can't play both Saha and Pandya in the team unless one of them is good enough to bat at 6 regularly .

Otherwise we have to drop Pandya or Saha because a tail starting at 7 will not win test matches overseas.

And considering finding a WK who can bat is easier than a seam all rounder like like Pandya .

Is Parthiv the solution ? No .

But just being a very good keeper isn't good enough to be in the team .This is why we should have tried Pant in the England series but we *ed up .

Shah isn't going to be dropped in SA series. But regardless of how good his glove work is , he needs to score.decent runs at no.6 .If not we need to do a keeper who does that .

Even if he is the greatest keeper ever , it's no use if we can't win matches. And we need our no.6 and 7 to score runs if we wanna win overseas particularly with our batting Line up.

I am great fan of saha . At home glove work is paramount

but I am dropping saha for second test. At home he is good bat . But here he is walking wicket and has no chance of runs

patel batting wise is best keeper in india . Good against pace and has done some knocks overseas and looked the part . Saha looked disgusting in this test

patel standing back can be ok . De kock is amazing standing back but up to stumps is **** to be honest. Patel won’t need to stand up much .

I play patel and drop saha . No time for emotion and all that crap about don’t deserve it . Time to be mourinio like lol do what you gotta do to win . Lol

patel I actually think against pace is one of best in squad . Bat him 3 and line up is much stronger . A lctially lile puj at 4 amd kohli 5

He is right . Pandya at 6 or saha there is too high . Makes us vulnerable

rahane 6 and pandya makes us very strong .

He is talking about the future of this XI, not this Test series, I guess. I honestly trust Ashwin and Bhuvi more than Pandya. Way too early to trust this guy in Test overseas already!

Agree . That’s why bat pandya 7 . Don’t stick him 6 and put heat on him

we can’t go in next test with saha or ashwin 6 that’s a joke . Patel bats 3 suddenly rahane walks in at 6 , that’s so much stronger

if patel misses a chance so be it . In this series a keeper who bats well over one who takes every chance is the priority. In India it’s other way round

How old is Saha? in his 30s? We need to look for a young good wicket keeper batsman, someone who's as good as Saha if not better and a decent bat. Parthiv is horrendous, he brings back bad memories, also he's not getting any younger(though he still looks like a kid). Keep Saha for few more tours and keep looking for fresh talent.... no point brinhing old hacks like Parthiv, DK, etc.

Btw what happened to Naman Ojha?
