Hardik Pandya - A Passenger in the team

You can't shunt out a player like that especially a player with tremendous potential. The problem with his batting has been that he has come very low down the order and every time finds himself in a situation where the team has lost 6-7 wkts ,so he tries too many things so as to get quick runs and goes for unusual shots. He should be regularly played @6 to build up his confidence.

in bowling department ,he has done decently whenever given the chance to bowl

Potential is there...the x factor is there...on his day can win matches on his own...but can he play according to the situation, play controlled knocks when the situation demands it?

If that one innings was an example of his xfactor and talent the remaining 4 innings show that he is not using his brains.

He should have a defined role...is he a batsman whom we expect a 50 mimnumim every time or is he a frontline bowler where we expect 2-3 wickets from him? This X factor that will get a quick fire knock once in a while or golden arm that will break partnerships doesn’t have a long upside.

If he is playing his 100th test, I would like to see him close to 4-5k runs (Gilly's territory) and may be 200-225 wkts. If he is around 6k runs, it would be an exceptional achievement .... and the x-factor. Imagine Ind is 4 for 80. That is when you want the comfort of x-factor of someone taking you past 250. Bhuvi and Ashwin may stick around more but Ind could struggle to cross 200, which could be a nothing total anyway. Ind would already be in the soup. Which is why we need a player like Pandya in the 11

Btw, to get a 50 min every time, the batsman would need to average 50. Not many of our specialists avg 50. Even during the famous 5 time, Ten and Dravid were above 50 and Viru got close (none of them scored a 50 or more every time they batted)

He needs to stop playing dumb shots.

Bowling will never be his stronger suit so he has to contribute more with bat but this series cannot be used to judge him. No batsmen from their team also have scored that many runs.

Our main batsmen have been just so inept even 20s and 30s from them would have done the jobs.

I am not saying he has to get to 50...isn’t that the expectation from the top order to get a minimum of 50 every game or even a 100? Obviously not possible every march....I am saying when Pandya walks in that should be the expectation rather than a mercurial knock that happens once in a blue moon.

Anyway not writing him off...first tour and tough pitches and opposition. Let us hope he will improve...looks like had all the right cricketing tools but main thing missing is awareness....this tour it is fine but soon the excuses that he is very young or he is learning the ropes or that’s the way he plays will start running thin.

23 with Bat (34 for BK, 23 for Ashwin)

49 with ball

Thanks.

Batting average is bad for all rounder. It needs to be improved. Ashwin batting lower that him has better batting average.

Bowling average needs to be bought lower.

He has played very few tests, so there is chance for him to improve his performance and get up to a level acceptable for all rounder.

I don't see anything wrong with the shot he played in the first innings. He targeted the right delivery, right bowler; just that it didn't set off. Maybe he could have spent a bit more time before playing that shot. But one shouldn't look much into it. He looked assured every time he came out to bat in the series. He will come good. Hope that happens today,

What should be done with Hardik Pandya? Would selectors send him back to domestic cricket to improve batting or bowling? Right now he is ultra useless in both departments. Bhuvi/Ashwin are better all rounders than him.

Domestic Ranji cricket will certainly help him improve. It is always better to play Ranji format.

How the hell is he a passenger

HAs made runs, taken wkts , fielded well .

Nobody has been consistent this series, he is new and we have to keep patience with him. Lets hold our opinon as everyone has struggled here

And as few of us have said here before have pandya n shankar both overseas and play them acc to surfaces

Flat- pandya

seamer friendly track- shankar

If ENG offer pitches like they did to Pak in 2016 won't be a bad idea to play both Ashwin and Jaddu. Nothing against Pandya but he shouldn't play every match, he will gradually improve no doubt and push his way into a permanant spot. His real role will come in Australia where we may have to go with Kuldeep+Pandya along with 3 quicks.

Not Ashwin, play Navdeep Saini instead. Instead of Pandya, play Shaw. Instead of Vijay, play Shreyas Iyer and make Pujara opener.

I have nothing against Pandya and I think he has been phenomenal. But India, if it wants to win abroad has to choose teams carefully. Having Pandya as a 4th seamer or 5th bowler does seem like an overkill to me. Even here in the 3rd test, it would have made sense to play another batsman.

He shouldn't be playing matches where teams can survive less than 80 overs in an inning as extra bowler isn't required in those cases send his batting isn't that solid.

He should definitely play conditions where team is more likely to score 400-400 runs like in Aus or flat pitches anywhere. He can be useful in those cases.
