BCCI needs to spend the money to get Pant a fulltime 'keeping coach

Pant is too good a player to go down the PaPa route.  He has some basic issues with his keeping that appear to be fixable.  But the time is NOW.  Not when he drops a few more and inevitably loses confidence.  Keeping wicket in tests is a very demanding job physically and mentally.  If a player has bad technique he will be found out.

If we can pay so much money to Smashtri and Bharat Arun, we can definitely afford a specialist keeping coach.  I forget the name of that county keeper who recently retired, and is considered a very good coach.  Call him up.  Or have this guy practice with Saha everyday.  Worth carrying Saha in the test squad just as a mentor even.

Said that earlier, Saha should always be in the squad at least as a mentor to other young keepers. We have the greatest modern day pure keeper in our ranks, time to use his services. Also he looks like a very humble, friendly and approachable guy...he can be like Pant's elder brother. Maybe his discipline and work ethic too will rub off on Pant, current coaches bevdas like Shastribot and Arun aren't known for these qualities. For his limited talent Saha is a ridiculous overachiever. There is precedent in how Healy coached Gilchrist in the late 90s, history repeating itself methinks IF we follow ATG Australia's path.

If Pant sets right his glovework we have a potential ATG in our bag. In the future Saha's role can expand and maybe he can be our keeping cum slip fielding coach. Slip cordon follows the keeper and they often train and stick together, so Saha coaching them isn't beyond the realm of possibility. I haven't followed this series but in RSA and England our slip catching was school level.

BCCI has the $$$, use it mother*ers. Get on the phone and hire Saha ASAP. Indian cricket and Pant need this to happen.

And * Dhoni, that *er blocked Saha's entry in tests by 3 years and is doing the same to Pant in white ball formats. * Dhoni, burn in hell you son of a *.

BCCI nevel will. and Dhoni is the ultimate spot-blocker these days. carrying on the distinguished tradition of playing long after peak form.

Pant has to improve but it’s laughable to see comparison with Parthiv.

I remeber stat that I read online on some Aussie website  - Dhoni dropped 18% of chances offered to him, which means around 70 dropped catches/ missed stumpings in 90 tests. The stats also showed nearly 30% of chances off spinners go down as dropped catches.

Was actually a Cricinfo analysis

The wicketkeeper with the most misses is MS Dhoni with 66 (18%). In his defence, Dhoni had to deal with a high percentage of spin bowling, which presents a much greater challenge for keepers. Miss rates for leading wicketkeepers off spinners average around 30%, for both catches and stumpings, but it is only 10% for catches off pace bowlers. It can certainly be argued that keeping to spinners is the true test of a keeper.

From my memory, Chandimal at Galle, Stokes at Nagpur (twice) , Chandimal and Mathews in Tests in India..Saha dropped catches as well. I am sure more can be added to this list.

Saha took some impossible catches and was brilliant with his gatherings but was not entirely blemish less. In % terms, should be around 10-12%  dropped chances. Pant is perhaps at 18-20% right now

Every single keeper has missed chances. Healy missed a simple stumping of Inzamam (last wicket) in Karachi, 1994 that cost Australia their first series win there in 35 years. Check the 4 minute mark.

Alan Knott the greatest pure keeper of all time dropped Wadekar on nought when we were reeling in the tense run chase in Oval 1971. Then he went on to drop GR Viswanath, our most clutch batsman those days. We narrowly won that match and got our first series win in England.

Of course Saha missed chances, but to his credit he plucked some impossible ones from 1st slip, silly point, leg slip kind of positions. His clutch keeping helped us win the Chinnaswamy test in 2017, otherwise it had 0-2 written. Overall % in gatherings matters. I don't know the exact figures but taking your word for it. Keeping to spinners in Indian pitches is tough, especially when you have such high quality spinners on sharp turners. Keeping against these genuine pacers too is tricky.... unlike Dhoni era, Kohli encourages hostile stuff.

I remember most of Saha's catches and misses. The Stokes misses were in Rajkot and I think he had a niggle. It got progressively worse (painkillers, cortisone injections are common at that level to manage pain but movement is restricted) and Parthiv replaced him in Mohali  and made a mockery of the art of wicket keeping the rest of the series
