This reminds me of Romesh Pawar from Mumbai who played a few tests and ODIs at the turn of the last decade. Despite his body mass, he was still playing good cricket when he was on the field

Suresh is still nowhere near Romesh Pawar size. Romesh Pawar looked like a rhino on the field. You could almost hear the earth cracking when he dove to field the ball.

Agreed. let's not insult Raina by comparing him to Powar.

Agree about his 100% dedication specially when fielding and encouraging teammates....but there is very little excuse for a sportsperson to let go of fitness while still playing top level cricket just a while ago. He has been having this weight issue for some years now...not just this year

Any ways , hope he proves people wrong during Ipl  and later .

Would hate to see him turn into those stars who only play to be part of ipl and not domestic because they don't need to work hard just for peanuts.

Raina is the biggest t20 player for India and is a sure shot in India 11 in t20 if fit.

He plays at 3 in ipl and succeeds most of the time.

Raina plays selflessly ? That's what is expected when you play at 6 in odis. He's a brilliant player no doubt but a bit overrated as I hardly remember few important match turning or match winning knocks from him alone..He seems to do well when the other man is playing a big knock.. his value on field his catching his part time off-spin was excellent though...

dont you actually lose weight due to Viral fever?

Depends if it affects your appetite or not. If your appetite remains strong but you cant train due to muscle aches and lacking stamina due to illness, then yes, you will put on a lot of weight in fat.

Agree totally. He has been lax in fitness for a few years now. We can question that while agreeing that he gives his all on the field

But if he's able to give all in the field, and his "shape" doesn't prevent him from doing that; then why all the taunts about "fitness".  They dont have to look like models.

as long as he plays well i think he is good. Lets not indulge in fat shaming.

why  not? It is a shame for an international athlete.

Not really for a batsman. Ranatunga was fat but in the 90s, except for Azhar, Jadeja (Ajay) and Tendulkar, nobody in the Indian team was as quick a fielder as Ranatunga.

So fat shaming is not necessary.

Ranatunga and quick fielder. you must be kidding. He could barely run in the field. He was good in slips, that's it. Being overweight is always going to affect your agility, degree of effect can vary player to player, but it certainly will.

He was quicker than any Indian not named Azhar or Jadeja in the covers.

Overweight doesnt affect agility per se from starting point. It only affects agility while carrying momentum. i.e., when already in motion. The bulk of the catches taken and stops made by close fielders are made in the initial trigger movement. Which Ranatunga was quite quick in.

This is the same reason why Ranatunga was quite good at stealing singles (trigger movement) than stealing twos (which require transfer of momentum).

Even if we keep this discussion of being agile or not aside, it is important for an Indian international to maintain his fitness being a sportsman. it only  happens when you lose the drive to improved, work hard, lose the dedication. He has enough money to spend on diet, trainers to get fit and it is not just for him but any Indian cricketer who carry extra flab. When a guy like me who suffers from hypothyroidism can strike hard work hard to maintain my fitness and i dont even earn peanuts in comparison to those guys earning in  millions representing Indian team. It boils my blood seeing these lazy asses.

Fitness ! = being big or ripped.

Fitness is a matter of stamina, agility, speed, etc.

A chubby Raina, who runs faster than a skinny Munaf, is fitter.
Looking fit and being fit are two different things. That is why we hardly ever see a 'gym bod' being the fitness model for any actual pro sport.

Running depends on athleticism and not every player can be athletic but they still can be fit that could help their athleticism. A half-fit Raina carrying pot belly no matter how athletic he is will never be as good as a fit and athletic Jadeja in the field. Comparison to Munaf is futile because Munaf was never athletic. Dont you think someone like Amit Mishra could have been better on the field without that belly?

Amit Mishra might've been. But Raina i don't think would've made a difference- he was always on the pudgy side and except for Jadeja, Kaif and Robin Singh, i've not seen an Indian fielder ever chase the ball faster than Raina.

i just don't agree that 'belly = unfit' in context of a close-in fielder and a batsman. Even for fast bowlers like Merv Hughes, i don't think their bellies made a difference, since Merv came with oodles of stamina and bowling speed is more about action than anything else.

we will never know whether their belly made a difference or not. For me, it does because I have played cricket and experienced it myself.

There is a difference between a player who was always overweight and the one who has added weight in the recent past.

It shows that the hours he has been dedicating to fitness has perhaps reduced.  When this coincides with a fall in overall performance in international cricket then the signs are even more ominous.  Raina ticks all the boxes.
