MS Dhoni and Ajay Jadeja are two sharpest cricket brains I’ve ever interacted with: Ashish Nehra !!!

Hmm..did not know that. Quite a fall from grace that one.

There was a time in the Sharjah Cup of 1999 when jadeja's excellent captaincyhelped us beat England twice i think. If he wasn't so busy fixing matches back then, he should've been a pretty good captain.

Dhoni is well know to be..but Jadeja i should say is surprising..but hey Nehra cant go wrong he has seen it all in 18 years.

Jadeja has always been known to be have a very sharp cricket brain.  Not surprising at all.

Known to whom?

Those who followed Indian cricket closely through the 90s.  Even as recently as a few years ago, Jadeja actually played a Ranji game, IIRC as captain, and his Ranji teammates and opponents were effusive about how intelligently he marshaled a relative weak team into a very closely fought game at Lahli.

what??

Wrong Thread, but something he said in his post interview irked me.

"Maybe the stats don’t show it, like I played my last Test in 2004 when I was 24-25, but the good thing with me was that the team management always wanted me to play Test cricket, and then one-day cricket. Even till six months back they were asking me to play Champions Trophy, but I pulled my hammy."

Rest were at almost end of their career and he definitely ended up loosing most. He was turning into a finisher but occasionally he played a crappiest slowest inning (Now I think they were all fixed).

I think I followed it fairly closely and this factoid was never brought to my notice. Also, pardon me if I am going to discard 'effusive' praise delivered by domestic journeymen in the sunset of a national cricketer.

He was the perennial Vice Captain for most of the mid to late 90s....subbed in as a captain in a few games and did well...and if I remember correctly was Considered to be appointed the captain in Odi’s at least ....so there was definitely a talk about him being a shrewd thinker of the game

Let's not get into a pissing contest over how closely you followed Indian cricket.

Ajay Jadeja was one of the best Indian captains we never had.

Cool as a cucumber.

I think he won a match for India with the ball once as a captain. Death bowling.

I think this match

Yeah, IIRC he did captain India in a handful of ODIs?

That decision to bowl first in semi finals at the Gardens still haunts me. That WC was ours if Azhar didnt had a brainfart.

In hindsight Lankans were the deserving winners. They killed us in the group match in Delhi making a mockery out of our good total. In that WC Lanka chased brilliantly against England (QF) and Aus (F against Mcgrath-Warne :adore:), doubt we had a chance against them. They were simply a league above us in those 2-3 years (1996-98). IIRC during the invincible run of the Aussies in the 2000s when Ponting was asked to choose dream opponents of his side in ODI he chose the 1996 Lankan team ahead of Lloyd's WI, according to him that was the highest level of ODI cricket ever witnessed in his memory...some praise I would say.

Yes, let's not. Although it was you who suggested somehow that all those who did follow cricket in the 90s were unanimous about Jadeja's pedigree as a 'shrewd thinker of the game'.

So all you have by way of evidence is a handful of game. And here I was thinking it takes a few season. Or at least first hand information.

Ease off on the snark buddy, the comments by others make it clear that you are the only one in this discussion who was not aware of Jadeja's cricket brain and the respect he has had from the cricket fraternity as well as fans.   No need to take it personally - its not like if you don't know everything about cricket then, that makes you any less of a fan.  No need to get your panties all twisted.

That is some exaggeration by Ponting

Possibly or may be he wanted to downplay Lloyd's team because if you look at it only that WI team can be regarded as even better than the Aussies. By placing Lanka above WI may be he wanted to show that the WI team wasn't as great as people rated.

IMO beating the Aussies in a WC final is quite possibly the toughest challenge in ODI cricket, they are so mentally tough and if they reach the final that means their players are also in form. Aussie mindset+ in form Aussies= dangerous combo and only 2 teams managed this feat Lloyd' XI in 1975 and Arjuna & co in Lahore.

This is what Anshuman Gaekwad said in this report after 1999 world cup. Not sure if those are exact words of report or not.

Quote

Ajay Jadeja: As a cricketer he is brilliant. His involvement with the game is unparallel. He likes to move on his own and sometimes he over reacts. He has an old knee injury which he can get rid of with proper treatment. He batted and fielded really well in adverse conditions. But he was much less vocal as thevice-captain. He should involve himself more in guiding the team. He does not want to say anything unless he is asked for. He should change this attitude.

The WI team had one problem, lack of a world class spinner in their ranks which the Aussies had.

As far as Srilanka goes they were really good in the 96 WC and their batting was scary dangerous in Subcontinent  but no way their team had players for all conditions...their army of spinners/allrounders bar Murali would not be useful anywhere else and Vaas was the only seam bowler they had...the rest made up numbers.
