How did Dhawan replace Vijay in the team even though the latter was match fit?

Is this the theme that we are going to see in the future under Shastri's tenure? Dhoni's favorite pets all making their way back into the team irrespective of the form. Surely, if a failure like Dhoni can still represent team India without giving any actual performance, where did Vijay and the other young players do wrong?

because Dhawan had replaced vijay and scored runs

Didn't Karun Nair do the same? Look at his fate now, replaced by none other than Rohit Sharma..lol... How did Dhawan fair in the overseas tours?

it does not work like that. Nair was a rookie. Dhawan was not even in the squad for SL tests. They had picked Mukund and Rahul, but Vijay was injured, Rahul had illness and Dhawan was called back, scored runs. Vijay was still coming back from injury in first test, so, they thought better to play Dhawan who has been playing regularly and was in good nick.

Then why was Karun Nair made to sit out after scoring a 300?

Nair was a rookie and failed in the games after that. he scored 26, 0, 23 and 5 following his 300 and got dropped. Dhawan made his come back in SL after vijay's injury and upset stomach to Rahul and made it count. Mukund was picked as opener initially who failed to score runs. Rahul came back and replaced Mukund. Dhawan then played ODIs, scored runs and same way found his place in test team too. Now you are asking them to play Vijay who was coming back from an injury and struggling for form in Ranji trophy ahead of inform Dhawan immediately.

Pretty simple really. Kohli thinks Dhawan is better than Vijay, which he is not - in tests. His selections have been baffling, at least in tests.

No.  He does not think like that. If that was the case, Dhawan would not have been dropped in the first place.

Vijay was one of our top performers in places like SA, Eng and AUS and Dhawan was piss poor. Shouldn't Vijay be an automatic selection for the opening role? I mean Shastri was glorifying Dhoni's past achievements to just get him in the team.

Vijay should be automatic selection, yes, but Dhawan was playing because Vijay was out with injury. Had Vijay been not average  in the last 1 year or 2, he would have come right back in like how someone like Kohli or Smith or Root would walk back in the team and replace anyone if they were out of the team by injury. All those tours you mentioned which he did well in, after those tours his average dropped to under 40. So when your average drops that low, you are considered good but not great opener anymore. He is still the right choice to play, but its hard to drop someone who has just scored a big century like Dhawan did.

Now that he is picked again, he should play and should start in South Africa.

He has dropped Pujara for Rohit too once, so it's not a one off.

that's a tactical mistake, not because he thinks Rohit is better than Pujara

lol..typical hate filled logic in the OP. Chewtiyapa at its best.

So all the wins and rankings in last 2 years in Test matches are because of Dhoni then. He is making sure his pets get selected, he is making sure we win. Dhoni's biggest pet- Kohli has been following the instructions very well. YAY!

M. Vijay And Pujara are our old fashioned Test batsmen who should never be dropped. Pujara combines well with MV. But fast scoring is somewhat an obsession for Kohli. Rahul and Dhawan can do that. Price he will play is top order collapses in testing condition.

Kohli will be exposed meaning actually exposed and fighting for his wicket against rabada steyn and philander co if he thinks Dhawan is better than Vijay.
