Has Jadeja won a place over Ashwin for SA series now?

Yes he should. Earlier I voted for Ashwin mainly for his batting but that has now gone downhill. Jaddu can keep one end tight much better than Ashwin, moreover SA has many right handers. Against England Ashwin has to play because of 6-7 lefties in their XI plus Ashwin's county stint experience. Besides Jadeja looked decent in SA last tour while Ashwin looked decent in Eng.

5 of the SA top six is RHB.

Jadeja has to start ahead of Ashwin .Ashwin will just be ineffectual

Super point. Another less than a spinners Paradise and Ashwin could not run through.

Jadeja was good and kept things tight. With four bowlers only Ashwins batting is less important

If we only playing 4 bowlers, all 4 should have ability to pick wickets. Otherwise we are losing the match even before start. Neither ashwin nor jadeja can be expected to get wickets in sa. In that case why are we even considering them. Bumrah is 10 times better than these 2 on sa pitches (assuming shami, ishant and bhuvi are the 3 first choice seamers.). Why can't we play 4 seamers and have a part-time spinner bowl around 5 overs for resting main bowlers.

How is Nathan Lyon picking up wickets on docile Australian tracks where as Ashwin looks impotent on flat pitches.Ashwin has not looked same since groin injury in England series. His bowling as been spotty at best.

They need to play five bowlers, even if fifth bowler gets one wicket. They have sorely missed fifth bowler in this test.

Who's this part-time spinner we have?   And playing 4 seamers is a recipe for trouble - both from a workload, and an over-rate perspective.   If a 4 man attack has to bowl 120+ overs in one innings - which is possible on a flat track, that might just nullify them for the series, not just that test.  A 4 man attack implies that it will be very difficult to keep out Jadeja.   He can be relied on to bowl 40+ overs an innings, at a decent econ rate, and that too very quickly.  And he can take wickets as well.

+1.   Our bowling unit needs that 5th bowler to share the work-load.   Even if its an less effective spinner, or an inexperienced Pandya.

I will be so pissed at Kohli if he reverts to six batsmen. No way in hell India is going to win matches with just four bowlers. The more I watch this Ashwin bowl , the less I want him to play as a lead spinner.

we could play a batting alrounder who could bowl decent spin, but do we have anyone like that?

Lyon uses bounce to great effect.

He spins the ball also more but Ashwin I feel has lost that loop which he had, it is going to a very hard to sit Jadeja out.

What the heck has Kuldeep done to be selected ahead of Jadeja and ashwin. This notion that just because he is a wrist spinner he will be more effective is foolish.

They did that in Australia by playing Karan ahead of both Jadeja and Ashwin. That move essentially lost them that test.

Lyon is a damn fine bowler, that's why.

Would a Jayant Yadav or a Jalaj Saxena, really be worth the batting upgrade from an Ashwin or Jadeja, and worth the bowling downgrade? I don't think so.

both are different type of bowlers. Lyon is a side on bowler and side on bowlers will always get more revs on the ball.
