Feels kind of piecemeal. I remember before England in 2011 some guys played in WI, others had been rested after the WC and came to England straight from the IPL effectively with barely any warm up matches.

 

This isnt quite as bad. But Jasprit and Hardik have played very little of late , them and the likes of Dhawan, Rohit , Rahane are going in off the back off LOI matches and a 2 day warm up match

 

The SL series wasnt a bad idea in itself, would have been good to go into SA tests after SL tests and then a decent break followed by a camp then at least two 3 day warm up matches in SA.  The NZ series could have been scrapped and Aus series made shorter to fit it in.

Indeed. But that requires foresight, planning and priotisation. All those things are secondary to $$$ for the board

The primary reason for India's compressed schedule for the SA tour is the BCCI's decision to ensure that SA Board got payback by forcing them to give up a boxing day test match with India.  Once you impose a January or post Dec 26th start date for the tour, its difficult to squeeze in much time for a warm-up game.

I can see the optimism. This squad is very  good on paper, every batsman is averaging  40+ with multiple centuries, the 2 spiners are averaging under 26 with the ball, 2 pace bowlers averaging under 31 and another 2 pace bowlers who have cobinmed taken 300+ wickets at 35. Add to that a pretty goodkeeper in saha, a fast-medium all rounder and one of the best limted overs bowlers. This squad is probably the best Indian squad Ive seen in terms of not having dead weight in it.

Bowling looks a bit weak. Umesh back to being erratic. Shami may get injured anytime. Cannot predict about Bhuvi. Ishant is crap. Pandya is a rookie but I think he may do well with bowling than expected from him.

So it's on our batting. Vijay-Rahul-Dhawan-Pujara-Kohli-Rahane and even Rohit is a very capable batting unit. So we have a chance to do good.

Dravid is the perfect person in an advisory/development/coaching role... but I wouldn't like him to be team coach because as a figure head he lacks aggression when needed. I remember the 2006 South Africa series was easily there for the taking but he just went for the conservative go for the draw method and lost anyway.

If Suranga Lakmal can wreak havoc on a slightly helpful condition against this line up think about Vernon Philander, Rabada, Steyn Mone Morkel. Morkel gave a torrid time to Gambhir by bowling round the wicket.

My understanding was that SA really wanted India to play boxing Day match, but because of the way the SL Series was scheduled, India could not get to SA by then

But last time (as always) we went in with 4 bowlers,this time pandya is definitely playing so there's your 5th bowler who is essential to make sure the rest of the 3 seamers are not exhausted

On topic I do believe that India will win this time,India have all the arsenal and  ancillaries ,just that they need to click as a unit
