My team for the first test

Rahul

Vijay

Pujara

Kohli

Rahane

Saha

Jadeja

Bhuvneshwar

Shami

Umesh

Bumrah

Long tail, but we got to go all out in the first test. This team will win us a test match for sure. That bowling line up got variety and pace to unsettle proteas.

Why not Hardik over Umesh? Hardik is better bowler than Umesh.

Play Hardik, 5th bowler is a just a filler who has to be able to hold up one end up and give main 3 seamers a rest as needed. Can't employ a 2nd spinner in this role as very hard to contain runs overseas as spinner, especially in first 2 innings of match

Tics,at starting even I used to think of pandya as a useless hack who would never flourish in the odi set up (especially after watching those airy fairy lappa shots in nzl series 2016) but boy didnt he prove me wrong big time and i kinda like him  a lot now.the biggest difference was that even after a poor start to the career he was given chances to build up his confidence and he stood up and performed for a year now.

In tests also I believe he should be tried and given a fair run before dumping him because I believe he has tremendous potential ,though it can easily backfire as well but you've gotta gamble

Quite rightly people saying question marks on wether pandya can deliver overseas in sa . Well guess what whole team has questions mark over wether can deliver in this year overseas tours .

only guy no question marks is kohli ( yes one eng your but otherwise stellar record ) as amazing record in nz, sa and aus .

but all have question marks including bk , pujara and Saha. Fascinating year and plenty will happen to discuss . Some names in team now will be out by 2019

Pandya question mark yes . But no different from rest . Get him in I say

Depends on the pitch.

If a pitch has absolutely nothing for a spinner over the course of 5 days, then 2 spinners is bad.

Or else it's not that bad. Our spinners can bowl long overs, keep it tight and help our pacers get a lot of rest.

When was the last time an Indian spinner got thrashed in an overseas pitch (excluding Karn Sharma in Adelaide). They almost always are more economical than our pacers.

My preference of two spinners is very simple. All games are about creating mismatches. two spinners create a bigger mismatch than 4 pacers.

I know we have been traditionally a spin poerhouse but THIS TEAM IS UNIQUE BECAUSE OF THE PACERS. For the first time since I started watching cricket seriously in 1996, India is touring an away country with such a power packed pace battery.

People who are discarding Pandya being too raw to be a test batter (or pacer), what is the alternative? Rohit? How many times have we given him opportunites? He never delivered overseas. Tell me one match winning or even a drawing innings away from home by him?

If we don't give chance to Pandya, how will we ever know his potential. I used to disregard the guy as being too flashy and flukey. But Boy! Has he proved me wrong or what.

First test team should be >...

Vijay

Rahul (Blessing that Dhawan is injured)

Pujara

Kohli

Rahane

Pandya

Saha

Jadeja(would prefer because of his fielding)

Bumrah(With his slingy action if he gets it right in baked hard SA pitches, he will be a force)

Shami

Umesh

If the pitch is flat its better to play an extra batsman ,Hardik will be cannon fodder on those pitches.

If pitch is flat cushion ur bowling with extra bowling and pandya pace can be useful\

i would play hardik and 3 pacers and no Spinner..let vijay bowl spin if required.

i wud play all 3 openers, virat ,pujara, saha and rahane or rohit who ever is batting well- this will ensure we can draw the game at least.

3 openers are in tremendous form rahul dhawan and vijay ,pujara and kohli and then rahane or rohit.

i wud open with left n right combo of dhawan and vijay followed by pujara n kohli and then kl rahul and then rahane or rohit who ever is looking good in nets.

rahul ,dhawan and vijay play the new ball every day and are used to facing international attacks and all the three are in form and are high quality batsman , pujara and kohli too..if rahane looks solid than he can play else rohit can score a 50 in 50 balls

ishant shammi bumrah hardik is a decent attack and all are fit and young bowlers.

i am assuming a fast green bouncy track...spinners leak big runs and even top spinners are attacked ..if ashwin and jadeja are doing well in nets and turning the ball and it seems that they are wicket taking , one of them shud be played else no use.
