How did tradition of part time bowling die in India?

Earlier we played with 4 bowlers with 3-4 part timers filling quota of 10 overs. There used to lot of debate about having 5th specialist bowler.

 

Now we have 5 specialist bowlers, but it is not enough anymore. We are looking for 6th bowler, but can't find one.

 

Why are Indian players one trick pony or so one dimensional?

 

Can't play all formats or all conditions and can't roll arm for few overs.

With batsmen getting so much better, the pie checkers of yesterday's era would be quite useless.

It was a good strategy while it lasted.

In ODI's part-time bowlers became redundant when ICC introduced the 4 fielders rule.

Rules with 4 fielders outside 2 new balls heavy bats.....part timers are asking for trashing

Dhoni who loves using them stopped using yuvraj who did well in 2011 Wc after that

Depends on captain as well, dhoni ganguly liked them.......dravid kohli didnt believe in them

Don't think it has completely gone.

If Pandya is having an off day where spinners are doing better then Raina will be asked to complete his quota like Jadhav was doing sometime back.

Not really, we have Suresh Raina who plays as a specialist part timer.

I have a lot of love for Raina, given the team player he has been over the years.  But that made me chuckle.

I think part-timers are extremely useful in ODIs (not in T20s). Just get 2-3 overs from the likes of Rohit. Teams generally don't attack in the middle overs of ODIs. Yes, he will be milked for 10-15 runs but suddenly you have just 7 overs to be bowled by the 5th bowler like Pandya.

I somehow feel Kohli is too serious about his bowling reserves and rarely uses part-time options. He can learn this art from Dhoni. He was extremely intelligent in using Raina/Sehwag/Yuvraj even when he had Ashwin/Harbhajan.

Haven't used them since Jadhav i guess.

 

One thing that I feel (and could be wrong) is many of the part timers (at least Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly) were go-getters with a sense of responsibility and outstanding cricketing acumen in their own ways. That is certainly not the case with lets say Rohit Sharma, the "come to India" approach doesn't sound like someone who walks to the captain and suggests he could slip in a few quick overs.

Isn't Raina playing in this xi because he can bowl a few overs, otherwise DK deserved a spot ahead of him

And as pointed above,with the current rules in lois,you can't risk with two many part timers,they can go for as many 20-25 runs changing the course of match

I find this talk of 6th bowling option a bit crazy to be honest. 5 batters + all rounder + batsman-keeper + bowlers makes the batting thinner than 6 batsmen + batsman-keeper + 4 bowlers at least in theory, the latter has been tradition for long. On absolute pattas, chasing even 350 will be a challenge with the deep batting teams are touching 400 & above. That 6th option better be good enough to play as pure batsman across most conditions.

even ganguly was very good with them, using part timer also has to do with following ur gut feel

Kohli is more of a text book captain n so was the case with dravid to

1. Part timers are less effective now because of the more explosive batting. They get picked on pretty fast and become big liabilities if the team depends on them to complete their quota. 

2. Busy calendars ensure players don't have time to develop secondary skills. Guys like Rohit and Kohli who started bowling little bit showed no improvement. Sachin developed a lot of his bowling as he played. Nowadays once you are at top level there is very little time to develop your secondary skill especially bowling which requires lot of effort. Guys like Steve Smith also have completely given up on bowling who started as bowler and was not as bad a bowler as now.

Superflat wickets, monster bats, 4 fielder limit, boundaries brought forward, 2 new balls, lightning outfields, more power hitters in each team. The only places part timers are still viable are in the Caribbean,Lanka,BD,UAE where the ball doesn't come on to the bat and these guys can dart it and get through a few overs.
