This is probably best team we have selected. Couple of debatable changes, but nothing outrageous.

Got to agree.

Kuldeep over Pandya would have been perfect ... but then again, having Umesh and Ishant in the same team may make captains uncomfortable regarding the dependability of the pace attack. After Shami,  Pandya has been our 2nd best pacer so far.

We have to pick our best bowlers per conditions in the 4 specialists bowling positions

I am not sure why Ishant is being persisted with. Based on current availability, Shami, Yadav and Kuldeep should be top 3, with Ishant and Ash battling for the 4th spot

Pandya provides too much flexibility and x factor to be not in the 11

As for batting, would have liked to see Pant in. Again too many tried and failed batsmen in the top 6

LOL. I do not understand what our team management  thinks but if anyone thinks that by hitting 10 boundaries in first 10 over will dishearten a test bowling attack then he is simply living in lala land. Basic rule for test match bowlers is, they dont care about boundaries. As long as shot is in air and not 100% in control of batsman, Bowlers and fielders are interested.

Now considering our glorious history, I would say, Simply park the bus. At Edbaston, Start with "no matter what we are not loosing this game" Our success in recent African series was because we parked the bus. Chepu and Kohli played the part.

People need to refresh their memories that by third test, Dhawan and Rohit were dropped unanimously.

Now Bowling wise, I think Kuldeep is a must as Ashwin needs support which Ishant can never provide

Only saving grace  for us is nepotism in English team selection and Chris Woakes injury. Lets just prey that Anderson has gone past his sell by date.

i wud have preffered kuldeep but with pandya also i get the thought process

I dnt get it when dhawan plays over rahul n rohit over rahane overseas

Contrary to popular belief English pitches help spinners. kuldeep was an easy choice over Pandya. I think both Dhawan and rahul deserve their slots.

Dhawan over Pujara can not be contested here...i dont think Pujara is Pujara in India, if he was India was sure to win.

Bhum Bhuv walk in - and May be Pant takes the gloves and KD replaces Dhawan in middle order thats the best possible for End tour.

even i wud have picked kuldeep , but atleast pandya is not a baffling selection like of kohli in past

Dhawan hasnt done anything in test nor in warmup the only way m ok with his selection coz pujara has been bad himself n is not in greatest of form

Preparing for the worst, so I was only happy to see this eleven. I was literally praying for these dummy heads (ko-sha) to somehow keep Rahul in the eleven.

my ideal eleven that I was hoping for

Vijay

Rahul

Pujara

Kohli

Rahane

Karthik

Ashwin (Pandya if green mamba / Ashwin if dry or flat wicket)

Kuldeep

ishant

umesh

Shami

if flat wicket, top six is good enough to score runs. we dont really need Pandya or 7th batsman. Also we would need spinners to bowl a lot of overs. so Ashwin is needed as a second spinner. If green mamba, we would need additional batsman. Pandya would be a better option than Ashwin. also Pandya would be more effective on green mamba.

why do you need to play Karthik as a batsman when we have a better middle order batsman like Karun Nair in the squad. Also other guy suggested to open with Karthik when we already have 3 openers in the squad. seriously, are these guys new to cricket? I would only play KD or Pant as a WK Batsman, no way they can get in to the team as a batsman.

I have no problem with any selection except I would have preferred 5 top bowlers.

I'll withdraw the motion if Dhawan scores a half century or more in either innings. Neither him nor Pujara are good enough overseas imo but happy to be proven wrong.

Also agree with most that we could've gone with a second spinner but I'm willing to give these bozos benefit of the doubt as we bowled really well yesterday.

I think you are one new to cricket. DK played as pure opener in our victorious 2007 Eng tour and was our 2nd best batsman there. He was also the highest scorer in the warm-up game. One of our maharathi opener scored a pair of ducks in the same warm-up and has been an utter flop as opener overseas.

Don't think Pujara is an upgrade over Dhawan. Nair is vastly unproven in overseas and so does Karthik. Pant is still new. We have to blame the selectors for giving a squad like this in the first place. The one positive about this is they will all get a chance as I don't think each will last for more than 2 tests in a row based on their abilities.

That was 10 yrs ago. Check his recent domestic stats as a batsman, we have so many better middle order batsmen with better stats than him. He is picked up in the squad mainly for his WK plus batting skills. Not picked up as a pure batsman. It’s cruel to play him as a batsman ahead of pure batsmen like Dhawan, Pujara or Karan Nair who all have better batting stats than KD and technically better batsmen than him. Check his overall batting average in test with other pure batsmen. Also don’t take his warm up game score seriously. There is a big difference in batting when bowlers and ball were fresh than coming in when ball is 50 overs old.
