English wickets are all 300 +.   In Champions trophy 2 years back the trend was to win toss and chase and win games. And this was the formula till the Poyz came up with a fluke win in the finals.

What changed in last 2 years

Pls don't say the pressure and ICC tournament etc since Champions Tophy was a ICC tournament too !!!!1

pitches have tended to slow down more than in that CT.

also, CT is a hit-and-giggle tourney compared to WC where the pressure is much higher and consistency is required across more matches.

Sorry not trying to counter the argument but see the stats... 40 games have been done and the chasing team has won less than 10% times. Baring BD no team has chased successfully above 300.

Have really the wkts gone so slow or in general the Batting of all teams are down compared to the CT.

good thread.ideally both england and india would love to chase in most situations but i suspect the ball holding up later on the day makes it hard to manufacture power.

Cautious start while chasing is leaving too much to be done at the end. A team batting first can swing freely and score 100-110 in the last 10 overs but a team batting second cant. IIRC, BD is the only team which pulled off a 300+ chase in this WC and they started off the chase on a fast note, batting quick all the way till the end of the chase. That being said, pitches slowing down, ball gripping a bit, bowlers executing a smart slow ball strategy etc have also been a factor. But IMO the biggest factor is the chasing team's mindset.

Chasing historically has been challenging on One da Cricket. Scoreboard pressure has been historically able to deter teams batting second.

However not the way it has gone in this WC. Almost seems like if you win the toss you win the game. 2011 WC was held in India where wickets were flat but it did not get slower to such levels. Frequently the chasing side won.

The ball has been too heavy on the Bat in this WC. Needed a more balanced competition !!!!

That adds to my point. Atleast in this WC - Batting quality of all 10 teams has been below their normal levels.

As @nevada pointed out, teams need to start positively. Because if you play too cautiously, you  create a situation where your team needs a very special innings from someone to pull it off. Special innings don’t happen everyday

On the other hand, if you start positively, you can create momentum for the team. If you get out, you leave enough time for others too. Chases are achieved through team work

vs Eng, Ind played itself into a position where it needed some 260 of last 30. Game was lost right there. Past that point, we were either trying to catch up or salvaging

India should be last team to prefer chasing. From shaky middle order to non existent lower order, there are all recipes of a disastrous chase.

Curators could not get time to prepare ideal pitches due to rain in the first fortnight. Also due to drainage systems, pitches have become dry.

Lords might not be a bat first pitch, of all the venues in the last week or so it seems to be the most balanced. Having said that toss+overcast conditions can make a huge difference there!

this has been so predictable ... win the toss  bat first win the match .... yesterday too when ENG batted first , yes the match was done and dusted. I just can't understand where  is the excitement in all these???? In champions trophy too, in the league match India crushed PAK & when final came more or less the same PAK crushed India. This is get so boring to the extend that this is not sports, toss(pure luck) deciding the outcome. That's why a split inns would  take off the advantage of this luck factor a lot . Team winning the toss should bat   first 25 overs, then tne 2nd team full 50 overs, then the first team next 25 overs. THat would neutralize this toss advantage a lot

If India chase in this cup, they really should think of opening with Pant to give them 70 from 50 balls type of start. Disappointing the pitch is so toss dependent and our bowlers are being negated on roads.

The toss should be eliminated all together.  The visiting / non-host team should automatically get to pick whether they want to bat or field first since the host team can tailor make the wicket to their liking.  That would even things up.

no ... even then it would be unfair to home team. Also , in an event like world cup there would be only 1 hosting team. All others are visiting teams.

Why is it impossible ??

At present it's 25 wins batting first and 13 chasing .

At one point it was 11 - 10

It is more a mental thing than actually chasing as India proved against England . The further into the tournamount the greater the mental pressure when chasing ....it's not impossible !!!
