BCCI To Check On Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma Rift, Split Captaincy An Option

If they make Rohit captain, there will be demand to remove him as well esp. considering he will not be at his peak by 2023. It could be a waste of a spot. A younger guy should be groomed at this point.

I'n not buying this at all. Kohli will not sleep until he leads India to another disaster in the next world cup.

This is my main concern with Rohit as captain. Very much possible that his form might decline in next two years as he approaches 35.

Hopefully BCCI realizes the folly of appointing a fool to all forms of captaincy & bestowing unlimited powers with almost nothing to show for.. Its not easy to clip his powers when Kohli is so marketable. Split captaincy is the first step I think

Get Shreyas Iyer in at no.4 and after an year if he is good appoint him as vice captain under Rohit and after Champions trophy or asia cup, reassess to give the captaincy to Iyer.

Hard to win 2023 WC If likes of Rohit, Dhawan, Bhuvi, etc., are still in the squad. Ind needs to learn to plan ahead. We do not even have young leaders identified

At best I am expecting t20 captaincy to be handed to Rohit..BCCI will come out saying they want to decrease work load and all irrelevant things and that Actor Kohli will come out in press hiding his tears supporting this move.

The guy is not even able to make it to the team...you want him to be captain.

 

He is not even captain of A team to WI....Pandey is.

Usually if a person is appointed to captain in only one format, he plays in only that format 

 

You can have a devoted test captain only if he plays tests. Or an LOI captain only if he plays LOIs. Usually, there will not be a situation where 2 guys play 2 formats where one plays under the other in one format and vice versa

It is India dude, If washed up oldie can play 5 yrs after his expiry period than anything can happen..Logical and situational demands do not have any value here.

That was always the senisble route seperate captains for t20, odi, and tests. BCCI isn't sensible

I'm not sure we have a viable alternative to Kohli as captain for 2023 that we know of at this time. I think if Rohit was 2-3 years younger he would be an excellent option, but I don't know if he will maintain himself in good enough fitness to lead or be part of a WC contending squad in 2023 at age 36 (unless he makes some major changes).

 

Now, Tendulkar was 38 in 2011 and I don't think he held us back in the field too much, and was still a superb batsman then, so it is not inconceivable for Rohit to be there. We just can't have him take over the reins now, and then become useless in a couple years with the WC around the corner. It would be my preference to have Kohli focus just on batting ( a la SRT) and Rohit be captain if possible.

 

No question at all that both Dhoni and Shastri have to go. Dhoni's value even as a wicket keeper is diminishing - remember he had a chance to catch Ross Taylor in the SF but it would  have required an athletic dive forward. I don't think he has that reflex anymore. As for his batting, "hitting", and his once-fabled ability to pace a chase.... the less said the better. Obviously he won't be there in 2023, so it will be a GD shame if we don't get Rishabh Pant as much experience as possible in the interim. 

 

No idea what Shastri adds besides being Kohli's buddy. We need an actual strategic coach and leader if we are lacking a strategic captain. A Kirsten type would be ideal, or a former captain like Ganguly. And can we have an actual accomplished bowling coach and batting coach FFS?

Being 1-2 years older doesn't matter .

What matters is maturity...kohli is going backwards in that area.

Kohli is 30, Rohit is 32. But I don't think one can argue that their fitness levels are comparable. People like Kohli and Jadeja will still be assets in the field at age 34 in 2023. I don't think we can guarantee that for Rohit at age 36 given his current trajectory (but if he makes the necessary commitment, he can). I think his batting ability will not leave him so soon - unlike Dhawan/Sehwag types, his game is not overly reliant on sharp reflexes.

Ofcourse   I know it. But wait and watch, Iyer will make the cut for WI tour and if he does well and manage to hold his spot he will get VIce captain at some point. Reason being that he is already captain of Delhi capitals in IPL and he was able to make that mediocre team do well with his captaincy ( with inputs from Ponting of course) and reach playoffs. Manish Pandey is a tried and tested failure.

 

Shreyas Iyer seems to have the luck factor also going for him like Rohit as seen in IPL.

 

At this point Shreyas simply have to bat well to get into Indian team.

Fitness is overrated. Cricket fitness and skill is different. You will see six pack players falling and getting hamstring, Touchwood Rohit had none till day.

Check Malinga. He was best player from Srilanka in this wc.

As far as fielding is concerned, slip, midwicket, covers, There are loads of olaces where most captains find peace.

Rohit has a far better catching record than dropoli .

Rohit is a fairly good fielder.

I don't think kohli's extreme fitness helps too much in fielding or captaincy.

He is the worst catcher and definetely not the top three fielders. It does help in his batting .

What good is extreme fitness if he is the one who drops maximum catches ?
