Babar Azam - an ATG in making?

Recommended Posts

Luke Ronchi: “With Babar Azam, I feel that he will be in the same calibre, if not there already, as some of the world’s top batsmen like Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson. It’s the way he makes batting look so easy and the fact that he never looks flustered by pace or spin. He plays nice and elegant shots and he is just a stand-out batter at the moment. I really enjoyed his batting in Australia where he was Pakistan’s best batter and he was the prime target for Australian bowlers to try and get out cheaply. And when he did get going on that tour, his batting was a joy to watch for all cricket fans.”

Babar is the greatest batting talent from Pak since Inzi, with better fitness and courage (not hiding below top 4 hopefully) he can surpass the legend from Multan. Always rated him highly, esp his strokeplay and timing. One of the rare Pak batsmen who isn't afraid of the short ball, will help him a lot in Aus/RSA where other highly rated batsmen from his country have struggled. Had a very good WC, his 100 against NZ was one of the best of the event. Like his attitude till now, hope he stays that way, needs to be high level consistent for at least 7-8 years. Since he plays for a weak batting order he will get more chances to shine and be noticed even if they may not be match-winning efforts.

Babar always had an unbelievable talent with copybook/classy technique from very early age but lacked some self belief due to being a very shy person and I think for dropping the school early for cricket and also lacked some  physical strength. Over last 2-3 years he has overcome these issues and now sky is the limit for him. In Kohli he is lucky to have a master whom he can continue follow and learn. Currently in test cricket , he is only behind Kohli and Smith and in WBC ( white ball cricket ), Sharma is also ahead of him.

He needs county stint(s), Pak FC isn't the best platform to develop world class batsmen and as such the batting culture has been lacking since Woolmer era. It is a miracle he made it this far, but only a couple of full seasons of CC can take him to the next level in red ball cricket.

He already plays county for somerset, i think a lot of pak players play county since they are free during ipl. Full season wud depend on his international commitment.

Majid and Babar belong to far different era and hard to compare them. Majid also lacked consistency, his problem was lack of motivation against lesser oppositions on batting tracks. He would perform better in challenging conditions whether it was against Lillee and Thomo in Australia, against WI pace battery of 70s in West Indies or against them in World Cup SF in 1979 or against famous India spin trio . His average was not bloated by playing against easy opposition and Pakistan used to play test cricket with big gaps in between. Not on stats but on technical ground, Majid has been the best batsman Pakistan has ever produced yet.

Consistency is hall mark of great batsmen.

Majid never was great batsman but he was capable of playing some eye catchy knocks.

Majid was flashy where as Babar is more classic, I like Babar a lot unlike Misbah he wants to bat in top of line up. Your other idiot Umar Akmal also wanted to hide .

In 2019 he played only 1 county match for Somerset last year. Which other county season are you referring to.

He played a lot of Vitality Blast matches for Somerset in 2019 but that is totally different format.

Must be atleast 27 if not 28.

He can never play inning like hetmayer did y'day .....they always give excuse that he is still 25 and can develop power game and than win matches like Kohli does. But the fact is all these great batsmen have started winning matches from early age and they have this spark which was evident from early stage of the career. However he can always play safe and highest run getter for pakistan, like amla was for sa. But for every amla and kallis you need an devilliars and smith.

He is a nice player. An anomaly for Pakistan to have, kind of like what we have had in Shakib. But is he an ATG in the making? Could be but seems less likely to me. & saying he's better than KW & JR is just absurd. He isn’t in their league.

He is not in KW and JR league ? Will compare KW and Babar's performance in Australia as a litmus test . FYI, Babar and Kohli are the only two batsmen in top 10 ( ICC ranking )  in all 3 formats .

That is again nonsense, if KW fails in Australia this series, Babar does not become better batsman than him.KW has already proved himself and he does not need to validate himself every series.

Let Babar avg more than 50 first before jumping into comparisions.

So a guy who has a average below 40 in tests is better than a batsman who averages 52 in tests. Sure man whatever floats your boat.
