So this idea is foolish in every sense- 1. Compromises 6th bowler 2. Changes position of rahul n iyer , they shud be given one role n allowed to settle in. This changing of order hasnt helped before. This will create insecurity among both 3 changes the position of our best batsman who became great batting at 3 All this to adjust someone who will be 38 next Wc. Well long term i think it has to be Kohli coming down to 4-5, it's a good step whatever maybe the intensions now. India will always produce quality top order batsman. It's a given. Just look at our youth bench strength for that. We have Shaw, Gill, Paddikal, Samson, Mayank, Jaiswal, Garg who are world class talents and all compete/will compete for the top order positions. Plus Pant is a more top order batsman than middle order for me, has batted top 3 all throughout his career. Dhawan (Maybe also Rohit) won't last till the next wc any ways so these young players will need to be brought in. As a result you will need experienced players to come down and finish the innings more and more and Kohli might need to do the same. We lack quality in middle order even in the backups and this will be the best way to come around that. The need is to find players who can play 6-7. Players who are capable bats and can bowl. We have Pandya who can do that, Sundar is an option alongside many upcoming spinning all rounders in the younger age group which will be a huge plus as next wc is in India. Plus one of the batsmen to roll his arm over. That's more than enough bowling options.
Austin 3:!6 Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Its too late a realization now and if Kohli had batted at 4 in that semi finals, I have no doubt India would have won that game. I knw Dhawan was injured but could have promoted Karthik at 3. I made this point several times before and during world cup that in the event of a pressure chase in knock out matches...Kohli should bat at 4.Considering ODI world cup is 3+ years away, it does not matter where Kohli bats. Dhawan might not even be a part of 2023 world cup. Kohli said in press conference today the aim to build a team for future. I am interested to know how continuing with Dhawan and Jadhav is building a team for future? I know its Australia and we cant experiment much but hope they try Gill/Shaw and other young players when we play a lesser opponent.Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
zen Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 (edited) There is still a lot of time for the ODI WC23. Injuries, loss of form, etc., can be a factor too. Question marks: Rohit (32), Dhawan (34), Karthik (34), Shami (real age?), Bhuvi (29, could lose more pace to be effective for a 10 overs spell in 2023), etc. Will depend upon how fit they can remain and the form that they can maintain esp. after 2021 We may have a team like in one below in 2023 (usually, the players for 2023 would be around 30-31 years old or less now): Player (Current Age, Age in 2023) KL (27, 30) Gill (20, 23) Pant (22, 25) Kohli (31, 34) Iyer (25, 28) Pandya (26, 29) "AR" Kuldeep (25, 28) Bowler (spinner or pacer ideally depending upon what the "AR" bowls) Saini (27, 30) Bumrah (26, 29) Other contenders: Batsmen: Agarwal, Shaw, Pandey, .... ARs: Samad (spin), Sundar (spin), Dubey (don't know how effective his bowling can be in ODIs), Vijay Shankar (28 years old, his pace could be even slower in 2023), Krunal (spin), Jadeja (spin), .... Pacers: .... Spinners: Chahal, .... WK Batsmen: Ishan (don't know his current form), Samson (does he keep regularly?), .... PS It will be worth to put an effort now to develop players currently in the 27-28 years or less age group Edited January 14, 2020 by zen Unstable Joe 1
Lannister Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 (edited) The lengths he goes in order to accomodate his Delhi buddy. I think he is talking about T20s as well, where Rahul is most effective as an opener and this kajoor wants to mess that up as well before the T20 WC. This should have been the tactic for the last year's WC, grooming Rahul as #3 bat. Now it's too late for that. Edited January 14, 2020 by Lannister Mosher and raki05 2

I've said this before and people were against it. Kohli has the perfect game for No. 4. What makes him most suited for the position is that he can not only be an accumulator and knock it around when the situation demands it but he can also be a finisher, take it till the end and win matches as he's shown so many times. In the future, even Gill can come in at 3 with Kohli following him. Vickydev 1
Sandeep99 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Kohli is the singularly worst thing to happen to Indian cricket!
TNAmarkFromIndia Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 You look at all the exciting young batsmen in India right now — Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal etc. They're all top order batsman. In the future when Kohli is the only one remaining, players like these can be accommodated in the top 3.

We would have done much better in WC , has we done this 2 years before . I hope they find a way to give likes of Gill and shaw a chance at some point . Lannister 1
putrevus Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 I still don't think Rahul is good odi Player.Look at his SR in list A matches. It just shows he just can't rotate strike consistently, he was struglling to do it even today.

His career ODI strike rate is 80 which is pathetic. Today he scored runs at strike rate of 77. Have been saying that he should stop playing like in 1970's and play like a new era batsman.

He is an opener, has scored all his runs as an opener, why should he be asked to bat at 3? Why can't Dhawan bat at 3 or in the middle order for a change? Ankit_sharma03 and Unstable Joe 2

It is stupid that Kohli selflessly gave away his position. Big heart man !!. Iyer is better in ODI than Rahul.
Lannister Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Hope this loser does not revert back to #3 after just one failure. It is the correct batting position for him and the team. Shaw/Gill Mayank Rahul Kohli Iyer Pant.. This should be our batting line up going forward. Just need to get rid of two frauds at the top.

If Rahul was any good in odis his list A his SR would have reflected it already.Iyer is still unknown but he is atleast a middle order batsman.I would try Mayank Agarwal , he has already shown it was a mistake to keep Rahul in test team.

How can you say Iyer is unknown.Let us have compariosn of Iyer and Rahul in ODI. Iyer is clearly the better performer in ODI. Iyer - Avg 47.60 and SR 104.84 Rahul - Avg 42.33 and SR 80.96 Iyer plays like modern era cricketer. Rahul's strike rate is that which was common in 1970's. Iyer even scores more runs per innings than Rahul.

Iyer is far better than Rahul. He should be selected over Rahul everytime. What is unknown about Iyer is his ability to handle high quality fast bowling. It is not his fault. He has to get chances prove himself.

sandsaims Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Anushka Sharma needs a wag partner to shop , hence the need for Dhawan.

It's not easy at all to adjust as Kohli's found in ODIs in last 5 years.. In the WC, when he'd to suddenly start playing as an opener, Rahul did fine. He hit a 100 and 77 vs WI in his last 2 innings before this, was scoring runs as an opener in T20s, suddenly gets asked to bat at 3 to accommodate Dhawan.
