The notion that Rohit is a great strategist is utter BS.

He is a lousy captain.

I'm not yet a fan of his in Tests, nor do I want him to walk in as VC.  But one needs to look at numbers.

Of the 10 ODIs he's captained, he has won 8.  (this doesn't reflect his captainship ability directly but as captain his average goes from 49 to 77). Win rate 80%

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/34102.html?captain=1;class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=start;template=results;type=batting;view=innings

Of the 19 T20is he has captained, he has won 15 (also as captain his average goes from 32 to 41).  Win rate around 78%.

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/34102.html?captain=1;class=3;filter=advanced;orderby=start;template=results;type=batting;view=innings

He hasn't captained in Tests.

Probably one needs to look at numbers in greater context, and it's a smaller sample size, but I wouldn't put down the man just so.

This is the kind of stuff that mucks up team chemistry.  The guys had come together as a winning unit feeding off each others' talent and support, and morale is high.  Now, you throw this new variable in the mix and risk disrupting the delicate balance.  Hope this does not turn into a case of subtraction by addition.

Maybe Pujara and Ashwin did not want to be burdened with a formal role and hence this solution was worked out.  Or maybe I am just rationalizing ...

Agree with everything but Does Rohit has age on his side?  He is freakin 34 year old.  This is not the age of a renaissance.  That means you are a proven TTF.  Why was Gill not played against SA?  What special did this senior did to take his place?  I think age is a criteria that is oblivious to our selectors.  Rohit may only have couple of years left..  Fitness slow reflexes..  Everything goes against him.  I'll back Rahul over him atm..  Even if he fails.

Some players reach their peak later. He is 33 atm.

If age was the criteria then why was Saha picked at age 36.

Rahane who is a year younger than Rohit scored another hundred in SENA after 6 years. Pujara is also year younger but looks 6 years older.

The good test team has to be blend of youth and experience.

Of course the cricket romantic and tragic Indian fan in me is hoping for a bit of history repeating itself.

Anyone remember how Sehwag was in the form slump of his life somewhere  starting mid 2006 and all though 2007?

Then on the 2008 tour to Australia he was almost not selected. Legend has it was Ian Chappell's public statement that the Indian selectors would be crazy not to pick him for an Australia tour that got him the nod.  He had scores of 29/43/63 and 151 in the 4 innings he played and had a subsequent career resurgence.

Come on tailunt, do a Sehwag!

So far, Rohit has mainly captained when Kohli has taken a break in less important series v relatively weak teams

That's what I meant by more context.  Sure you have a point, but he can only captain when given the opportunity.

All I'm saying is that he cannot be knocked as being a lousy captain.  Not yet.

Well it should be Rohit getting picked too. He hasn’t played anything since the IPL. He can’t just waltz into the team and ruin a winning combination. Sydney will be a patta so if you drop Agrawal or vihari then it would not be fair to them.

That is a good point too. Agrawal and Vihari must be given a longer go. But I was speaking to some guys who think he will fare better than Agrawal. ok he can play but he should open and not push agrawal/vihari to open and bat at 5. I was more astounded with him coming into the squad and becoming a vice captain of the test team hitting the ground running in a format that he is least suited to and TM going past an established test player like Pujara for VC. Some in this forum think its the right thing to do :loco:

its a Strategic shrewd move. Rohit sharma is a shrewd smart captain( see IPL, there is no doubt in that).

Getting him into leadership , clearly indicates that He will become a part of strategy building and on field management.

When a smith or labu starts scoring , one needs to trick them to get out.  we won this test as we got Smith out cheaply.

But i would put my money on smitch to score runs and thats when India will find the going tough.

Rohit has matured and is at his very best ..we cant say that about his fitness though.

as a vice captain , he will be helpful to Rahane.

It would look stupid to not pick him after asking him to quarantine him for 14 days so that he can available for 3rd test.

Everything can be resolved in terms fairness, if Sydney is devoid of grass just play 4 bowlers, 2 + 2 combination.

R Sharma comes in for U Yadav.

Genius, that SA series was the last series he played where he was asked to open and he put in a record breaking performance. Since then we have played only one series in NZ. Should have been in the Aus test squad from the start but for selection mess up.

On leadership, basics of being a good leader (great at strategic and tactical decision making, making the team feel secure and confident, backing players, consistency in decisions, rallying the group together, calmness etc) remain the same irrespective of the format, but perhaps you are not intelligent enough to understand all that.

Yet most here in ICF don't agree with you on this. So much for your intelligence einstein. What part of SA series being held in India did you not understand. Rohit was always a HTB and failure everywhere else. He is not even that great against spin in test cricket. Ask herath. Steyn showed Rohit's aukaat in that series in SA. He basically said he has scored more runs than Rohit  All Rohit can do is to ask him to come to India

As a VC, he will play the next two tests blocking the flexibility of dropping him if he doesnt perform in SCG. Surely he is a chanakya in this

"There was never an iota of doubt about who will be India's vice-captain once Virat takes a break and Ajinkya is elevated. It was always going to be Rohit and Pujara was just a stop-gap arrangement till the former joined the squad," a senior official privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

My respect for Pujara only went up :hatsoff: -> Focuses on playing tests. Does the difficult job of batting in the top order.  His #s in top order are wrongly judged based on how those in the MO do v a relatively soft ball. Gets dropped now and then ... But still comes back w/ stronger performances such as in Eng (carried his bat through in one inning with a 130 odd) and the series winning performances in Aus in 2018. Here too when he could have been the captain, is only given a stop-gap arrangement as the VC in favor of someone whose place in the test side is not for granted.

With Rahane being persisted despite nothing in SENA in the last 6 years, Rohit allowed to play his politics to join as VC, Iyer drafted in to the test squad, Shaw preferred over Gill, Thakur in test side iirc as a backup, my guess would be

Bumrah should be future captain and Gill vice captain for test matches.

Bumrah and Gill will be a great combination. A batsman and a bowler combo is the neeed of the hour.

So Fat Blubber Sharma couldn't make it to the first two tough pitches and now wants to cash in on flat Sydney pitch, typical coward mentality

This tubster should stick to playing children's game of limited overs and let grown ups play Tests.

Will dance and hop a few balls, but swing will always get Rohit. This fatty is not made for Test cricket.

It will be injustice to whoever is dropped for this Test reject.

His selection in the 11 should have been kept optional.

This is unnecessarily closing an option

He could be vice captain and 12th man.
