Sundar is a traditional batsman with aggressive mindset. But he cannot manufacture shots like you expect with a pinch hitter. I was always against this idea.  Every time when he is forcing himself to up the temp he looks awkward and ungainly.

Sundar is a decent Parthiv Patel type LOI batsman and a very good prospect for test batting.

 

Dhawan is miles ahead as a batsman than Sundar as opener in ODIs or T20s.

 

If you don't want Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli in ODIs together because they arent explosive up front then we have to wait for Shaw to establish himself in that format, but even there the problem is Shaw is your right hander and you will be missing a left hander in Dhawan.

In a 190+ chase, sending Sundar is asking for trouble because you are just reducing the number of overs AB and Maxwell will be restricted to and as a result, they may end up throwing their wickets in the process to smash from ball 1.

Sundar is a bits and pieces player who has to be picked purely based on the need.He cannot be a core player for any Indian side. Dhawan is proven odi batsman who has always done well under pressure.Now Dhawan seems to have found a new touch .

he isnt a bits and pieces player. he is only 21. he has solid technique. he is a fantastic talent in the jadeja mould. watch what you say about a potential hall of famer candidate. You dont just go out on your debut and score vs australia and england in consecutive tests if you arent talented.

There are lot of one or two test  wonders. He is another Shastri in making with weaker bowling . That is definition of bits and pieces player. Jadeja is an ATG bowler atleast in Indian conditions and will walk into the team just based on his bowling. His batting is always a plus.

I would say, he is Shakib in making. He is a solid test bat who can average 41-42 over long period.
