Greatest non-allrounder (specialist) cricketer of all time - Glenn Mcgrath

Glenn Mcgrath has done it all. There are great specialist cricketers like Viv, SRT, Warne, Murali, Hadlee, Lillee etc etc... but Mcgrath is above ALL OF THEM.

 

Domination of subcontinental batsmen in the subcontinent: - Indian batsmen have NOT been able to dominate him - his bowling avg in India is 21.3 - that betters the average of our greatest spinners on Indian soil - Kumble, Ash. His number of wickets are limited by the fact that he has other strike bowlers  to share the spoils with - else his numbers would be even better. He has often spoken of how he likes the "carry" that Indian pitches offer. This is the supposed to be the toughest tour by far for non-subcontinental fast bowlers.

 

Big match temperament : No cricketer in history has such consistent big match performances -time and time again. A mind blowing  bowling average of 16.43 in  27 finals, with an average of more than 2 wickets. 

 

Fun fact about Ashes 2005:  Although Aus lost that series 1-2,  both the test matches they lost were the ones where Mcgrath did not play due to injury. Aus never lost a game even in that Ashes when Mcgrath was in the playing XI. Aus would have won that series too had Mcgrath played all the games.

Can't argue with the numbers tbh. Best ever. 

 

Even played well in India. That should tell you how great he is. He has one of the best averages in India along with Shami and Steyn.

McGrath and Zaheer Khan are the two greatest fast bowlers of all-time. Pace is not everything.

Brian Lara ? Bradman? Murali ? Mc Grath is great but not the only great in this category.

Always my number one. No other player raised his game like McGrath in WCs, big matches, finals etc. And no one owned ATGs like him.....nearly every great batsman of that era struggled against him. 

 

Never saw enough of Ambrose though, probably the bowler closest to him.

I'll put Gilly above him - only cricketer to have three 50+ scores in WC finals! McGrath was good but Warne was the one who won Oz the 99 WC finals & SF. Likewise it was their batting, especially the blazing start in 2003 that won them the game, then it was all Gilly in 2007 WC finals 

 

Gilchrist is the only player to have played 3 WCs & won them all, it isn't by some coincidence that Oz dominated during his reign! Yes they were really good when McWarne played but really does anyone remember the difference between their own results either side of the dominant 99-07 span? Yup it's Gilly - the single biggest difference between him & the next best side!

Zaheer Khan had a peak for 3 years where he averaged 21. Then became a trundled again. Insult to compare that mediocre bowler to McGrath. Zaheer averages 30 plus in India.

I have issues with illogical, semi illiterate clowns jumping to comment on threads and arguing without reason and logic.

 

The thread title says non-rounder/specialist.  WKs are all-rounders because they perform dual roles ( batting + keeping ) - was that too hard to comprehend ?

Going by your re reasoning Bhajji should be a greater LOI cricketer than Sachin because he participated in 2 World cup wins ( T20 2007 + 2011 WC )

 

......and ABDV is a lousy LOI batter because he never won any major trophies.

 

Its pointless to argue with jejunes like you who don't know that Mcgrath is inarguably the greatest test fast bowler of all time statistically in addition to being the greatest performer in ODI finals 

 

It maybe well be well beyond your IQ to comprehend how staggering the below record is for ODI finals.

In tests I"ll take Malcolm Marshall by a hair's breadth. 

But yes Mcgrath is the GOAT all format bowler fasho.

He is the best bowler in history of cricket in my book.He excelled in all formats and was a winning player. Marshall and Steyn were good in test cricket but due to lack of height  they never had the same potency in shorter formats.

For tests, I did the below for Oceania's cricketers sometime back. Based on performance points per inning (let's call it PPI), where 1 wkt = roughly 21 runs (based on some back of envelope calculations I did some time back):
