He has a point. Ranji Trophy, at this time, is not commercially viable. Ipl funds first class cricket. Now, I don’t see why Ranji trophy couldn’t be revamped in a way that would make it better for viewers to watch either on tv or live at the stadium

It was never viable. It was always the case except in the 70s,80s.  So saying without IPL cricket won't survive is absurd. It just makes a bunch of guys super rich, BCCI rich.  Will produce more players who wants to do well in T20.  That is where the money is.  With or without IPL , Indian first class structure will survive.

Right. But the compensation for first class players, access to facilities, coaching, physios etc. are better, in part, because of the money the ipl rakes in.

Definitely we have those benefits. But it is a bit over the top to say , their survival depends on existence of Tests/ODIs. On one side he says "it would be foolish to think someone would prefer IPL over country". On the other side  this. Is he going to be coaching any team in the IPL?

He did say, in one of his interviews, that if offered the chance, he would take an ipl coaching job. So, maybe we’ll see him with the Lucknow or Ahmedabad franchise..

IPL over country is only applicable for overseas players. IPL is our own product.

Domestic T20 league is syed mustaq ali not IPL.  IPL is franchise leagues   Indians don't take part in domestic tournaments due to burn out. But they never skip IPL. They skip test match, they don't worry about burn out ahead of world T20. That is called putting your country ahead of money.

How?

Can you share revenue and expenses of BCCI to support this argument?

Total expenses of BCCI is approx Rs 1592 crores including IPL.

Total non-IPL earning was approx Rs 1610 crores.

Clearly IPL doesn't fund first class cricket.

BCCI provides 75% to 80 % of ICC's revenues.

IPL provides atleast 60% of BCCI's revenues. Often higher.

BCCI doesn't provide 75-60% of it's own revenue to ICC.

BCCI earned 4000 crores last time and of that 2400 crores was from IPL.

That 4000 crores includes earning from ICC and not the other way.

When we say that BCCI provides 70% of revenue to ICC it means that the matches from which ICC earns money are due to Indian team playing in the tournament. Nothing to do with IPL.

When we use term x % of y, the y is not same everywhere. You can't calculate 60% of 75% of 80%.

Which Is why I said indirectly.

BCCI's expenditure on it's domestic structure and player development are funded largely by IPL money. This includes the Ranji Trophy and other development methods needed for test cricket.

And those players participating in international cricket are fetching the ICC almost 3/4 th of it's revenues.

He's absolutely correct. IPL has massively boosted BCCI's income (as per media reports ~3000 crs revenue earned from the last edition). A lot of grass roots infra uplift, player benefits (a decent remuneration for cricketers of all age groups, air travel for all teams including age group ones, nice hotels for stay etc), professionally organised domestic tournaments, investments in improving infra at NCA and other regional academies are largely down to the boost in revenue BCCI got from IPL. Almost every state association has a world class stadium of its own primarily funded by BCCI grants.

While bringing its own massive revenue, IPL has also helped expand the fan base and got more sponsors into the our cricket. Safe to say, without the IPL, the international cricket media rights wouldn't have seen such a substantial growth in its valuations.

Directly or indirectly ICC earning is not from IPL.

BCCI earns more than they spend from non-IPL sources.

Domestic structure is not funded by IPL.

Then where does the ipl revenue go? It’s not like bcci has shareholders who pocket the gains. So if it is not going to operating expenses, maybe it’s going to capital expenditures like stadiums or it’s going to a reserve for future outlay. Either way, it is Indian cricket that benefits. Also, it is doubtful that the BCCI earmarks non ipl revenue for a specific purpose and ipl revenue for a specific purpose. More likely, it’s a big pool of revenue, part of which goes to fund operations, another part for capital expenditure, and yet another part to a reserve for future outlays. If we say that all are necessary, then of course ipl revenues are required to fund Indian cricket, including first class cricket.
