For someone playing as a regular in the test for many years - getting “dropped” is a significant signal and ominous sign of things to come. It can only be considered terrible if you have been a regular and just the same year led the team to a series win in Aus against all odds. 

 

Getting dropped in NZ series because of a long drought of runs  is not the same as being a non performer and playing on. 

 

He has gotten selected again without anything changing between the last test against NZ and the first upcoming test against RSA.

 

What the drop meant is that - He is just a test match or 2 away from being binned permanently.  

 

 

He was not dropped, he was injured. That's what BCCI said. Also, we can almost never tell if a star is happy in his life, one might be doing good professionally but his own life is hell. We cannot tell if Rahane is having bad days based on his form alone.

These grey-zone  communication tactics are common in BCCI/ Indian cricket.

Remember how Kohli mocked Ashwin with mankading gesture an act that Ashwin performed in a match completely unrelated to RCB.  Ashwin played that incident cool. Have you seen Kohli doing the same to any other players? I know once he took a dig at Mumbai INdians. But Rohit didn't back down. He gave it back in the most subtle way. If you look at carefully he always kept the players who looked promising uncertain. He did that with Pujara, Rahane, KL Rahul everybody.

on a related note, he kept on playing some cricketers even after their peak was gone like ishant and rahane because these guys could aid in deflecting some of the criticism that would have come his way.
