He started the trend of genuine pace.  Venky had better build. But never as quick as Srinath

Venky struggled to hit 130. he was about 12-15 kph slower than Sri. good bowler for Eng/SA though.

He is probably the only leg cutter bowler India has produced in its history. It is pretty much non-existent these days. Merv Hughes bowled i think. Even in cricket history there is only less than 10 known leg cutter bowlers.

His spell of 6/33 against pakistan in chennai is still the top three by an indian paceman in india in last 25 years. It was immense. Pity we lost that famous tendulkar back pain century match.

Good complement. He has played with pretty much all the best bowlers India has produced in their history. Kapil Dev, Zaheer Khan. He is well on his way to achieve that. His only competition may be Shami.

Shami ageing and going forward will be on downhill while Bhumra will reach his peak provided he is not injured .

Both were slim but tall, Srinath bulked up post 96, ankola was well built, so was kuruvila, Prashant vaidya and dodda Ganesh infact all of them were over 6 foot except agarkar.

Its scary how good Srinath would have been with a third bowler and bowling analytics. He was over bowled and he bowled a yard too short. He got his length spot in last two years of his career. Great man.

and two more factors: 1. dropped catches, and 2. problematic temperament (gave up a bit too easily after said dropped catches).

Srinath was overrated. Didn't know how to bowl overseas. Averages 36 overseas and is the major reason why India won zero tests overseas in 1990s with the Pakistanis laughing their ass off on the mediocrity of bowling we put up that decade whenever we travelled.

Also, he used to get sledged by batters. In contrast, pacers like Zaheer used to sledge several talismanic cricketers including AB de Villiers and JP Dumminy and got them out in big games.

Did you watch cricket in those times ? Most of us who did would disagree with that assessment. He did get a lot more bowled/lbw dismissals at home due to his preferred length and the superior bounce in SENA wasn't as productive in that aspect but he was a pretty good bowler especially given our dearth of resources. It was just Kapil before him that broke the initial barriers, else we'd be playing a lot of spinners and opening with Gavaskar on occasion. As late as 95/96, we'd take 4-5 spinners to Eng and Srinath/Venky didn't have a third seamer to rely on.

The haunting memory of WI tour during his injury: Venky (quickest), Kuruvilla (6'5" slower ball expert), Dodda as the "pace" trio :shot:

Off the 106 wickets Bumrah has 102 are from outside of India.  32 each in Eng and Aus, 19 in SA, 6 in NZ & finally 13 in West Indies. He is truly an overseas specialist if the sport ever had one.

I don't even have to double check and that is the most unique for any bowler in this sport. He has more away wickets to boast of in a very lopsided manner. 102/106

Bumrah is truly the rarest of the rare diamonds we have unearthed.

The Pak pacers have always praised Srinath, from 96-2002 his test numbers were better than waqar, Wasim, akthar and vaas. He was the best bowler on show in the Kolkata test and clearly quicker than waqar, Wasim only a tad slower than akthar. Srinath was terrific in SA and nz, did okay in England.

Stats in SWENA :-

Dev 150 wickets, 30

Khan 134 wickets, 32

Srinath 102 wickets, 35

No point mentioning Bumrah or Shami here so I am skipping them. Also, Srinath did had Venkatesh Prasad from 1996 onwards who was a pretty fine seamer for overseas conditions.

Bowling averages :-

Aus - 50

Eng - 40

WI - 42

NZ - 34

SA - 25

So, only SA is where he did really well.

I'm guessing you're just going by stats without having seen 90s cricket since the numbers don't tell the complete picture.

Yes he wasn't a Kapil Dev level bowler, however the typical taunt from Cronje etc to the then Indian captain/team was "your two vs our four". They knew the likes of Ganesh/Johnson were ineffective and hence Srinath & Prasad were extremely overused while even their ARs like McMillan/Kallis were good enough to keep one end tight and get the odd wicket as fourth seamers.

That doesn't tell you the whole story. He played in Australia in 1992 as a rookie.  Next one was against ATG Australian side. In between never had a chance. In some of the series he was very unlucky not to have more wickets. AHe was one guy who created enough pressure that Prasad was able to capitalize on. One thing he lacked was raw aggression. Ganguly had an argument with him Srinath if i remember right. Ganguly asked him to be available for England tour i think. Srinath refused. In 2000 our team was more like Tendulkar or bust team. It was not easy to exert pressure on opposition like we do now. Imagine only Bumrah is bowling  with Unadkat, Vinay kuamr as back ups.
