In MO he does rotate He goes into a shell quite often and not just in odis but in t20is too and that's the reason why his t20i str rate is so bad. He needs to work on that aspect, it's glaringly obvious.

That wouldnt be just because of boundaries Not talking about T20Is,he hasnt done well yes but opening may work there even more
BacktoCricaddict Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 Would it be sacrilegious to suggest that Pant should mainly be a test batsman but chosen only as a reserve keeper in the LOI squads? Between Ishan Kishan and KLR, we have keeping options for LOIs, and given Pant's inconsistencies in these formats, he should not be an automatic choice. raki05 1

Everybody knows that playing whiteball cricket for India internationally is the #1 way to make endorsement millions. How do you justify keeping out a player like Rishabh unless he himself isn't interested? India carried Rahane even in the T20 side for years as "reward" for being a test regular. Like it or not, once you earn your stripes and make it to the 'core' of the team, you get a long rope. Deservedly or otherwise. And arguably, its not the worst management approach. Being ruthless, and being kneejerk are very close to each other.... Vijy and BacktoCricaddict 2

Tangentially, being an all-format keeper-bat is probably more mentally taxing than almost anything else in international cricket. And just to clarify, I am the biggest supporter of Pant as a test player. He is the GOAT, and would be the first name I would etch on to an all-time India cricket team.

More like protecting him from himself and maximizing his success in areas where he has undoubtedly proven to be a megastar. But I get what you are saying about the endorsements. sandeep 1

There is so much cricket that India needs to rotate its players. Not everyone needs to play every tournament/series unless it is versus a major team and in ICC events. In ICC events, Pant is likely to play. Edited February 9, 2022 by zen sandeep 1

At this point i don't put my money. He is an extremely high risk batsman bit like Afridi. He doesn't have these long levers like Yusuf Pathan. So he often steps down the wicket and gets into awkward positions. When he connects it looks monsterous. Otherwise it looks innocuous. I am really keen to have the stat of how many balls he faced from seamers and how many from spinners and how many runs he scored against each type.
Vijy Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 had a failure which was unfortunate. this pitch had something in it for the bowlers. moreover, he has opened in List A/other format for quite a while now, so he is rusty. he should get at least 4-5 extra innings at the top consistently, and not be discarded or moved down the order after 1-2 more failures.

First class Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Looking at Pant's talent and temperament , making him an opener in WBC might prove to be a masterclass. He can be for India , what Gilly was for Australia , opener in WBC and late middle order in tests. Lord and Vijy 2

Right now he is 2 or 3 failures away form being scrutinized because India lacks depth. Prasidh, Siraj, Chahal are the 3 of the lower order today. This means as soon as 6th wicket falls we are pretty much done. It is like 9 down. So every single 6 wicket is considered important. India needs a strong 7 batsmen. Plus 2 more than decent lower order. 2 genuine bowlers. Right now the balance is terrible. India has to decide if they want to become a bowler centric team or batsmen centric team. If they want 5 gun bowlers at the cost of poor fielding/batting then you run the risk of stifling the batsmen.

India will have to find someone to do the role of 6th bowler whose batting is most likely will be hit or miss. Jadeja who himself is only probably good for ODI. Not as a finisher. Even as a bowelr he can't operate in power play. Thakur or Chahar or both is a must. For someone who is mocked has terrific test match figures. If you Jadeja/Thakur/Chahar/Pandya or Venky/Bumrah/Siraj or Prasidh. Then that is a decent depth.

Pant plays better when fielders are pulled up. That's why he's more successful in tests than LOIs. Its a no brainer to use him in powerplay Sehwag 2.0 Lord, jusarrived and Adamant 3
Adamant Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 I wish this is not a plan to dump Pant when Dhawan comes in. Imagine Pant failing in the next match and Surya doing well. Kl Rahul is an automatic selection (lol) and Sky will be preferred over Pant in middle order if he plays one more sensible knock. When Dhawan and Pandya return this equation will become complex.
