2022, a test for Rohit as captain

No Indian captain in recent past has had the opportunity to play in three multi-teams event in an year. In 2022, Rohit has led or would be leading in:

  • IPL 2022 - Mar to May. His team received the wooden spoon. Also was 0-8 at one point.
  • Asia Cup - Aug to Sept
  • T20 World Cup - Oct to Nov

His achievements as captain are almost zero this year apart from doing well in bilaterals which most experienced Indian captains do. Bilaterals success is more for new and inexperienced captains, not for someone who has been a VC captain and led franchises for a long period.  Rohit has also enjoyed playing for well settled teams. MI has an established set up and retailed its 4 core players. Team India is well settled with IPL springing up a strong bench strength.

In terms of importance, I would rank Asia Cup 2022 < IPL 2022 < T20 WC 2022. Asia Cup can serve to provide confidence but it is relatively a low key affair where not winning a title goes against you in a big way than winning it (as India is the hot favorite). Of the remaining two events, it is the world cup where he will be judged the most. A year without any titles despite having the opportunity to lead in 3 multi-teams event will mark 2022 as probably the worst year for any captain of late.

Let's hope India is able to do well.

When you say IPL, why is IPL 2022 only being mentioned? He is a five times IPL winner and when you have captained for so long, one or two bad years are bound to happen.

Rohit has also captained and won his team Asia Cup in past. So, he is doing great. One or two ICC tournament failures won't really mean much. His biggest test would be 2023 ODI World Cup.

As outlined in the OP - we are discussing 2022. Now that he is leading India too (not a VC), which makes it 3 key tournaments in a row. No other Indian player gets to captain,in so many key multi-teams tournaments in a year (and that too relatively strong teams).

First let Ind win in 2022 (IPL 2022 is gone). In 2023, we can look at IPL 2023, WC 2023, & maybe WTC if the final is scheduled.

Lot of Trophies are coming but his main legacy wud be to bring stability and calm in this team post Kohli's chaotic era . He ll bring the best of many before he leaves - pandya and pant already are showing great signs. I hope Rohit-dravid get the best out of KL the LOI player.................a guy of that ability cannot play like a coward as its only our loss.

He should have been made captain post 2019 in LOI , those 2 yrs was a loss to Indian cricket only

Rohit had brought the much needed calmness in the team, it's unfortunate that we're only able to see him as a short term captain (don't see him playing after 2023 ODI WC).
Him and Dravid have atleast tried to inject youngsters in the team. Avesh, Arshdeep, Bishnoi, Hooda, Samson all are getting chances under them which will bring much needed motivation for the fringe players as well. That's different from era where likes of Rayudu, Jadhav, Pandey were the preferred backups.

Rohit's body is failing and he won't be around for much longer. His absence in the 5th test in England hurt us very badly. But he and Dravid are doing their best to instill a positive, player friendly culture. Rohit has even talked about the team having multiple potential captains, something which his insecure predecessor would never do. The team has shed its conservative approach in LOIs and so far the results have been good. Hoping for the good show to continue in bigger tournaments as well.

Reading Ross Taylor's comment about KL Rahul missing i wonder if he is by nature a safety-first guy.

His biggest worth is this. Bringing in a culture where teams don't over rely on few individuals. World T20 is a fluke tournament. Australia despite losing 5 series on the trot due to toss advantage won the world T20.

For the record:

IPL 2022 - wooden spoon

Asia Cup - likely out of the tournament (lost to Pak too)

Already a worst record of an Indian captain failing (as expected) in 2 multi team events in a year.

Now let’s see what happens in the T20WC22 :hmm:

He is already 35.  Sucked in the entire tournament.  Both in batting as well as captaincy.  Lacks any sort of physical fitness.  Not sure what is he thinking right now.  Next T20 WC is after 2 years.  He should hv announced retirement from t20 by now.  What's the point of keeping quiet?  Does he think he will be captaining the side at the age of 38?
