Very difficult test batting conditions in tests is different from pressure cooker T20 situations. The former is a test of batting skill. No doubt Rahul has that. The latter a test of mental strength. And Rahul totally fails in this area. Test match batting isn't a test of mental strength?! Of course it is. Got to fend off Anderson probing away. Again not in the same way as T20... I don't know if one is necessarily worse pressure than the other
Sandeep99 Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 Just drop and get Pant to open. I can see him having the effect as Yousuf Pathan did in 2007 T20 final. Technically and mentally way better than mental midget Klol. raki05 1

Fully buy into the attacking mindset even against genuine pace- easy for us keyboard warriors to say on a forum :D But we saw yesterday, put Pak under pressure and they can fold The other thing I dont buy fully, is the idea that he fails under pressure. He scored hundreds opening the batting in England- a very different kind of pressure, but quite something none the less. Too much pressure on himself, it seems like. Just needs to slog a couple. I don't buy the whole "body language" BS. But it is a fact that he has been in inconsistent form coming back from injury and it was always a risk to have an out-of-form bat in PP in a WCT20 tourney. He just needs to be told to go bonkers - like 24 (8). Saaku. No need to "anchor" and have the pressure of batting through the innings and make 85 (72) or whatever Edited October 24, 2022 by BacktoCricaddict raki05 1

Seems like yesterday pressure plus good bowling got the the openers. Rohit too wasn't the same agressive player of last few months raki05 1

IN a match where Kohli pulled off a miraculous win, after Kohli , Rahul was trending on twitter. Even lot of blue tick guys were blasting Rahul away. They have numbers to back up. He is no spring chicken. Around internationals for very long. Great players have this immense stage presence. They impose themselves. Look how Pant does in Tests. Even over the hill Kohli looked very confident. You could see that in guys like Dhoni, Yuvi, Raina. This guy despite talent just doesn't belong to the leagues of them. I don't think telling him to "express himself" will work. Best option push him down the order. Force him to come out of the shell Lord and raki05 1 1
Gambit Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 He looks like a tub of jelly at the crease. Pant needs to come in for him. 8-10 balls of mayhem from Pant at the start is worth more than 15-20 balls of wobbling from Rahul. raki05, SM2907 and vvvslaxman 3

KL is just meek, unmanly (for a lack of a better word) in these situations. At least go out fighting try you normal game. He is the next captain in line (whether he will be eventually is a different story), he has so much backing, what do you have to lose? why is he batting like he is fighting for his spot? paddy upton has a job on his hands. raki05 and Laaloo 2
vice Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 Rahul can play innings like Kohli where he starts slow and goes bonkers in the last 4-5 overs. For that, he needs to play atleast 15-20 deliveries. He's getting out too early. This is how he used to play for the KingsXI when he got the Orange cap, slow starts and then hitting out in the death overs. This could work for smaller targets. Also it's a two edged sword, as a opener you're not making the use of the powerplay and in the death overs, finishers or any one else would also be looking to hit out. This is sort of an approach of keeping wickets in hand, might work for bowler friendly wickets but for flat wickets, this can go wrong if you get out after wasting many balls before you get to launch later in the innings. For an opener, I'd rather openers take advantage of the powerlay. Shaw would be my #1 choice. Rahul has the skill, it's in the mind. Also, if he's going to build an innings as an opener, rather to have him at #4/5, where he'd have clarity for his role and hit out. It's not his place in the team is under threat that he would be under pressure.
Gollum Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 Play KL in middle order, must make sure there isn't time for him to think, he must rely on his instincts and muscle memory instead of overthinking. What say @Ankit_sharma03? Maybe not as late as DK but definitely not in 1st half of the innings. Lord 1

Either that or drop him altogether, tough decisions have to be made now. You can't fail in 10 consecutive KOs, big games and expect zero accountability. This is unheard of, even the worst chokers of all time had 10% success rate, at least some decentish knock. KL has been an abysmal failure, biggest mental midget out there.

Rohit was amazing in the inaugural WT20 (against RSA, Pak), more recently in 2019 WC. KL and Bumrah have nothing to show for. Lord 1

When you come hard at them you make them think. You bring the bowlers out of their comfort zone. there is a cascading effect when opener bullies the opening bowlers. An aggressive opener like a Shaw would have destroyed the Pakistani in the first two overs. When you have a meek loser like Rahul who thinks he is batting on a green mamba on a day 1 pitch in the morning after putting into bat by the opposition. Would Shaw have made a lot? Probably not. But something like 28(13) or 33(20) would have ensured we wouldn’t need a once in a generation innings from Kohli to win the match. nevada, raki05, vvvslaxman and 1 other 3 1

Forget Shaw, even our #8 Ashwin would have played his shots first up, there was nothing threatening till Rauf was introduced in the attack. It's all in the mind, KL comes with a premeditated mindset in these big games to do tuk tuk, 1st ball that Shaheen bowled was a juicy full toss on leg stump, this fool almost gave catching practice to the bowler. Any other batsmen that was a 4 or 6. This coward is getting on my nerves now, I used to back him a lot a few years ago. raki05 and Laaloo 2
