Iyer should bat at 4 and SKY at 5. That also means the TM is stupid to not know about what the approach in batting should be..
tapandrun Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 (edited) Such a vague selection, why pick 16 players for 3 match home series, some 2/3 month backs they needed a left haded batter in top 5 that they had to play Pant (even after not so promising white ball record)and Axar (TM thinking him a frontline batter) now just 1 Lefty and that too cannot make into 11. When classy Rahul reinvented himself for T20s after breaking away Test mode..I had high hopes from him but his repeated injuries..reoeated failures..meant he always remainec..and today too..just as a promising player..he is 30 now.. neither he did well in Tests nor sparked up LOIs.. his attitude or body language doesnt give any confidence to me.. he is wasting a spot in the team and harming balance as well.. if he is given more chances and we didnt preoare Kishan or some other keeper..we know whats going to happen in wcup.. To accomodate him..Kishan will be dropped..and tgey wont open with Rahul as he wont be able to keep + open.. so Gill will play..who along with Rohit..will provide slow starts only.. so one of Iyer or Sky will sit out which is unfortunate.. he is fkin up whole team’s balance.. Rohit has already called all Indian cricket followers bunch of idiots. He said we confuse formats. He has also informed gill will open inplace of ishan so Rahul has to play.

Haha..ya they are..as they still pay to watch this hopeless TM..and we all keep having hopes, futile discussions..and people like Chetan Sharma comes back as Chairman of selectors again..NCA keeps doing nothing..state TM keeps playing preferred players..

Bhuvi/Siraj/Umran/Kuldeep/Jadeja/Pandya . So you have only 5 spots left. Rohit/Kohli/Hahul clan will do everything in their power to keep others out. Boobi's death bowling will be there rationale.

It highlights the lack of foresight into carefully planning and building a squad that can win a WC. I expect Fatman, KL and Kohli to do well against SL, hence cementing their positions for the WC opening game. If India wins the 2023, it will be on the basis of the few remaining players not picked because of nepotism.
Gollum Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Ideally we shouldn't even be talking about either/or when it comes to these two. Both walk in the Indian XI especially keeping the venue of the WC in mind. SKY has firepower, Iyer has clutchness factor, former better against quicks, latter easily the best player in our team against spin (crucial in the middle orders, an area where we have sucked for many years now). Both will have vital roles if we are to win the big one. Don't understand why Iyer is underestimated so much on this forum, remember it wasn't firepower that won Eng the last WC. It wasn't firepower that helped NZ trump India in the SF. Generally you see more balanced contests in ending stages of WC, we can compromise a bit on the firepower bit, what we desperately need is some clutchness especially in the middle order, historically that has been the area that has won team WCs. 2019 Stokes, Buttler 2015 Smith, Clarke 2011 Yuvi, MSD, Raina 1999 Waugh, Bevan 1996 Gurusinha, Aravinda, Ranatunga 1992 Imran, Miandad, Inzi etc. More than brute force, I see top shelf 'temperament' in this list. You can have both- clutchness and firepower. SKY and Kishan can give you firepower while Iyer is a clutch player. But it is all done for KL Rahul spot since he is now a senior member. Need4Speed 1

zen Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 (edited) S Iyer, If I recall correctly, used to get life early on in his innings, which is not happening anymore or at least in the first 2 ODIs v SL Edited January 12, 2023 by zen sergio04 1
sergio04 Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 (edited) He is very poor against swinging ball and bouncers. He can not score 80 ball hundred on flat pitches when top order gives platform like 25 overs 160-2. Dravid should back sky at 4 if India wants to win wc. Edited January 12, 2023 by sergio04
Sooda Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 (edited) Obviously both should play, Rahul needs to be dropped. Cant happen otherwise. Edited January 12, 2023 by Sooda
wanted_desi Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Very Unpopular Take on it. Given KL will play no matter what: 2 out of Kohli, SKy and Iyer can play. Kohli should be benched because other two are better at the moment.
Moochad Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Don't chinta. Rahul is only playing at keeper until Pant is back. Then he will replace Iyer

Kohli scratched around and scored a 100. Here he got 2 lives as well. He joined on the back of a big opening stand on a road. He will be rendered useless by spinners. INdia's biggest weakness oflate has been spin.
Texan Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Iyer vs SKY is a very unfortunate decision that we need to make due to this senior player preference mentality of Indian TM. Ideally, Iyer should slot in at 3 and SKY should bat at 4 or 5. Kohli should be the one making way. Hitting two hundreds (one a very chancy one) doesn't really tell you whether Kohli is truly back or this is just a temporary flash of form. While in the case of SKY, we know that he is very much in form. If we had SKY batting at 5, no target would seem impossible to chase. Just think about how that would allow the top 4 to bat more freely. Even if we have to accommodate Kohli, then Gill can make way for Kishan and SKY can play in place of Rahul. Vk1 1
Majestic Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 There is no ideal way..each player has their plus and minus..it is just about what we prioritise as per the need. That's where subjective opinions comes and you might have to take a decision on a subjective opinion. Iyer, Rahul and SKY all have their plus and minus. It is about whom you back. For all being said about Kohli, he atleast manages to churn hundreds after getting set which allows the team to get past 300 mark even if lower order middle has failed.
