History will remember Virat Kohli the captain for bringing a ruthless winning mindset into Indian cricket. Kohli initiated some changes that the BCCI and the top brass are inculcating now (focus on fitness, important to prioritise the World Cup at the expense of IPL and workload management among others). However, since the national side couldn't win a single trophy under Kohli as the captain, the BCCI didn't take much time to sack him as captain of the ODI side after he stepped down from the role in the T20Is.

 

 

Kohli had mentioned then that he was informed 90 minutes before the selection committee meeting that he was being removed as captain in ODIs, which sparked a huge furore and difference of opinions between the then BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and chief selector Chetan Sharma. Speaking about the whole episode, Kohli said that he was considered a failed captain since he couldn't win a single ICC tournament but he doesn't believe in the notion. According to Kohli, leadership is about building a culture rather than being measured by a trophy, as it is a short-term thing.

 

Speaking on RCB Podcast Season 2, "Look, you play to win tournaments. I captained in Champions Trophy 2017, 2019 World Cup, I captained in World Test Championship, and T20 World Cup in 2021. After three [four] ICC tournaments, I was considered as a failed captain.

 

“I never judged myself from that point of view; what we ended up achieving as a team and as a cultural change that always going to be a matter of pride for me. A tournament happens for a certain period of time but a culture happens over a long period of time and for that, you need consistency for that you need more characters than just winning a tournament,” he elaborated.

 

, who has won a couple of ICC tournaments as a player under MS Dhoni's leadership (ICC World Cup trophy in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013 ), considered himself lucky that at least he has a couple of titles under his belt as some players never even achieved that.

 

“I won a World Cup as a player. I won the Champions Trophy as a player. I have been part of the team that has won five Test maces. If you look at that point of view there have been people, who have never won a World Cup,” he further said.

With all focus being on the ICC Cricket World Cup returning to India, which is scheduled to take place later this year, Kohli and the current skipper Rohit Sharma would want to give it their all considering this could be their last 50-over World Cup.

Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli opened up on his relationship with former captain MS Dhoni. Kohli in the past mentioned that Dhoni was the only person out of his teammates who reached out to him amid tough times and reiterated the fact while opening up on the unconditional bond between the two.

 

As a young player in any team, the captain and the bond with him can become a dictating factor in your career in any sport leave alone cricket. Hence, the trust the captain puts in the player and him responding with performances then lays the foundation and that has been the case with the Virat Kohli-MS Dhoni relationship as far as Indian cricket is concerned and the bond has lasted beyond the cricket field and playing years for the national team. Kohli in the past has opened up that Dhoni was one person apart from his childhood coach and wife Anushka Sharma, who genuinely reached out to him during his tough phase and now he reiterated it while mentioning that the bond is unconditional.

 

Kohli, who is currently feeling free and is probably in the best phase of his career since the 6-week break he took before the Asia Cup went through a period of almost 9-10 months where nothing went right for him. He was stripped of ODI captaincy, gave up the role in Test cricket, couldn't buy a run across formats, had his worst IPL season in a decade but once he stepped aside from the game, he reflected on what wasn't going right for him and then was back to being the white-ball beast he is.

 

Speaking on RCB Podcast Season 2, Kohli has aggregated 25,000 international runs said, “I have experienced a different kind of phase in my career currently. It’s been a while since I felt (this) free in the sense how I felt all these years of playing at any level of cricket."

 

Kohli said that Dhoni reaching out to him was also special because he isn't that active socially, he wouldn't even pick his calls while recalling the learning he gave it to him.

 

"What is interesting is that throughout this phase apart from Anushka, who has been the biggest source of strength for me because she has been with me throughout this whole time and she has seen me very closely as how have I felt, things that I have gone through, the kind of things that have happened…the only person who, apart from my childhood coach and family…genuinely reached out to me has been MS Dhoni.

 

“He reached out to me and you can rarely get in touch with him. If I call him on any random day, 99 percent he will not pick up (the phone), because he just does not look at the phone. So, for him to reach out to me…twice it has happened now and one of the things that he’d mentioned in the message while reaching out to me was that: ‘when you are expected to be strong and looked at as a strong individual people forget to ask how are you doing?’"

Kohli said that those words somehow stayed with him as he has always been associated with his aggressive persona on the field but when he was going through the rut last year he realised how important it is to take a step back and look at oneself before pushing the reset button.

 

“So, it (Dhoni’s words) hit home for me because I have always been looked at as someone who is very confident, mentally very strong, who can endure any circumstances and find a way and show us the way. Sometimes, what you realise is that at any given point of time in life as a human being you need to take a couple of steps backwards, understand how you are doing, how your wellbeing is placed.

 

"So, there are not many places, for the people who have played the game for a long period, as strong individuals, they can go and explain in a way that the other person can understand. That’s why I mentioned this particular incident because MS Dhoni knows exactly what is going on, he understands it because he has been there himself.

 

“He has experienced what I have experienced right now. So, it is only out of experience, and feeling those feelings in that moment is the only way you can be truly compassionate and understanding towards another individual who is going through the same thing," he added.

He also gave up rcb captaincy because he failed there for a decade. Somehow he doesn't see the irony of saying this in an rcb podcast

For how long he is going to do this rona dhona over captaincy? He was failed captain, brought back Bhajji when he became test captain, brought back Yuvi when became ODI captain. It is almost 1.5 years since his captaincy days are over, still he keeps sulking about it on different platforms,now this RCB podcast (The team whom no one takes seriously). This "Dhoni supported me" talk has been parroted by him almost 1000 times. Chewitye concentrate on your batting.

Virat needs to stop ranting....put his big boys pant on and suck it up. I actually consider him the most aggressive and successful captain in recent times...every captain is different in terms of success. Dhoni won all the ICC trophies but came up cropper during tours of Eng/Aus/SA ...his only overseas series victory in SENA came at NZ. So instead of crying out loud for his ICC trophy failure Virat should acknowledge that and point to his SENA & home victories.

He and previous captains were dumped like trash by BCCI selectors so nothing new but nobody kept whining like he continues to do.
