1st impression of IPL 2023

A long tournament where the form of teams can fluctuate (some can lose steam, while some can gain momentum), however, since all the teams have played a game, below are the 1st impressions:

1st, it appears as if 2022 playoff teams are simply continuing from last year. Despite some players missing, all 4 teams look even more competitive. The 2 new teams will be playing at home as well.

2nd, CSK started off relatively well (you cannot count a loss versus the strong Wolves, GT, against any team. GT seems to find a way to win). If CSK does well at home, it has a fighting chance to get into the playoffs.

3rd, PK appears to have enough depth to beat relatively weak teams. It would depend on how it tackles the last year's top 4 and manages close games. PK seems to go off the rails in pressure games.

4th, the last 4 teams - DC, KKR, MI, & SRH appear to play less as a team and more like a bunch of individuals put-together. It is a long tournament so they still have time to improve. On many occasions, we have seen such teams improve when they have nothing to lose and go on to play spoilsports for other teams towards the end of the tournament.

5th, great atmosphere at most of the stadiums. The more matches you watch at various stadiums, the more you realize how sophisticated and grand the Ahmedabad stadium is -> great capacity, minimalistic modern design, light shows, crowd atmosphere, etc. The jewel of India!

Don't agree with Ahmedabad stadium. No matter how glittery and shiny it looks, you just cannot have 60m long boundaries. The geniuses that designed and approved to construct the "Biggest" stadium with 60m long boundaries should be fired immediately. It's taking away all the fun.

I liked Mohali stadium the other day. That should be the standard for every Indian ground.

The boundaries at 3rd man, fine leg, etc. area would be 60 meters. The boundaries in the mid on, deep mid wicket, etc. would be in the 75-80 meters range!

1. Looks like a high scoring tournament. Has been a trend among all T20 leagues recently.

2. All teams improved and corrected minor mistakes from last year. Only those who got worse are CSK. GT, SRH, MI mostly at the same level.

KKR made a good buy of Lockie Ferguson. He is better option than Southee and gives a death over bowling option alongside Russell.

Shardul also is a decent A/R to have among Indian contenders.

Lack of indian fast bowlers and big hitters. Yet another IPL and still nowhere to be found.

Fast bowlers are all in injury-land (Mohsin Khan, Krishna, Bumrah ...).  What about Kuldeep Sen?  And Rajvardhan Hangargekar - how fast is he?

Big hitters?  It's been a while since we saw anyone emerge here.

Abhinav Mahohar, Tewatia and Abdul Samad are the last hopes...rest everyone is falling short of expectations.

They all are influenced to statpad rather than concentrating on forcing results in their r side's favour

Sab baad me tuktuk karne lagte hain,it is instilled in everyone's mind

Hardik Pandya,Pant both have been compromised and aren't even the shadow of their past version (in LOIs atleast)

High SR game ,high risk which is branded careless, irresponsible batting in corridors, coaches are stone age school mindset type from the grass root level

Need two drastic steps to address this

1)Allow newcomers to play atleast in The Hundred,SA T20(for its Indian:wp4:) maybe Big bash as well

2)Hire modern age specialist LOI coaches like McCullum,Morgan etc

Same goes to fast bowling, foreign coaches Steyn,Lee etc

KKR is showing some early promise. Maybe it has something to do with below :hmmmm:

2012 W; 2021 F (same digits and adds to 5)

2014 W; 2023 ? (adds to 7)

Teams have played 2-4 games (so still a part of the early impression):

TEAM M W L PT NRR
LSG 4 3 1 6 1.048
RR 3 2 1 4 2.067
KKR 3 2 1 4 1.375
GT 3 2 1 4 0.431
CSK 3 2 1 4 0.356
PBKS 3 2 1 4 -0.281
RCB 3 1 2 2 -0.800
SRH 3 1 2 2 -1.502
MI 2 0 2 0 -1.394
DC 3 0 3 0 -2.092

So far (in the order of the points table above):

LSG - Its overseas players are showing good form. Pooran, Myers, & Wood. Stoinis is beginning to look good and QdK is still to come in.

RR - Buttler is in good form. Others will continue to try to play around him. The bowling attack has experience in Boult, Holder, Ashwin, & Chahal.

KKR - The spin attack is promising (Narane, Varun C, & Suyesh) ... Batting and pace bowling is likely to remain inconsistent. Russell is yet to fire so if he does, it will help the batting to be competitive.

GT - A solid all-round team with some good batsmen, spinners, and pacers. With KW out, Shanaka is expected to join the team soon.

CSK - Relies on batting depth and spin (Jadeja, Santner, & Theekesana). Its success could depend on performances at home.

PK - Can be competitive if its key players maintain form. Need to see the impact Livingstone can make once he joins the team.

RCB - Similar to PK in terms of reliance on select players (Kohli, Faf, & Maxwell) so its fortune will depend on consistency.

SRH - A promising team on paper (Brook, Tripathi, etc.). Need to see how the potential is transformed on the field.

MI - Reliant on batting esp. of SKY and big hitters like Green and David. To be competitive, 3-4 of the top 6 need to click in almost every game.

DC - Has some talented overseas players (Warner, Powell, Nortje, etc.) who need to pick their game up. The form of Marsh can be the key.
