At 17, Mhatre was supposed to lead Mumbai’s Under-19 squad this season. But sensing his prodigious talent – the amount of time he has before playing a shot besides an array of strokes being his key strength – the Mumbai selectors tried him out in the pre-season tournament in Karnataka.

He scored a big hundred against Gujarat and owing to Musheer Khan’s freak accident, found himself making his First Class debut in the Irani Cup. Having played out the new ball against Mukesh Kumar and Prasidh Krishna and then marking his Ranji debut with a fifty against Baroda  a hundred against Maharastra , has underlined Mhatre’s talent.

The fact that he drove with panache, pulled with elan, charged down the pitch off spinners and flicked pacers at will indicated there is more to Mhatre.

Mhatre is the latest from Mumbai's production line that rolls out promising youngsters ever ready to step up when the first-choice players are unavailable.

Two years ago, when the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan were away for national duty for the last couple of seasons, a 17-year-old Musheer Khan made his Ranji Trophy debut. And now when Musheer is out injured , another 17-year-old has stepped in in his place, almost like he was packed and ready in a warehouse

Mhatre took the game up when he was five, but it was at 15 that he really began to think that the runs he was piling up in school and club cricket could be done professionally.

By December 2023, he had made it to Mumbai's Under-23 squad for the CK Nayudu Trophy and was also named in MCA's Under-19 team of the year for 2023-24.

At the start of this season, still in Class XII, Mhatre had an inkling that a Mumbai call-up was coming. He was asked to take part in the red-ball KSCA Thimmappiah Tournament, which several players use to tune up for the start of a new Ranji season. There, he smashed 173 against Gujarat and 52 in the next game opposite Andhra.

Mhatre scored 19 and 14 against the likes of Mukesh Kumar and Yash Dayal, and as soon as the Ranji Trophy season started, he took no time to register his maiden first-class half-century against Baroda, top-scoring with 52 on a spicy surface in Mumbai's first innings when only one other team-mate crossed 30.

Mhatre has started with a bang, he has lived up to the promise he had shown in age-group cricket, and now he will want to stay true to the character of a promising Mumbai batter and really make it big.

Bhai can he play on a wet pitch on a monday morning and at least score a 20 like jaiswal so that we at least get 60 next time. We want those kind of players. I m still not sold on sarfaraz playing cummins in brisbane or playing against woakes in headingley

He will be as or more talented than Jaiswal ,to be selected directly in Irani trophy against ROI.

He has also repayed  the faith by being MOM in this 2nd match.

His debut Ranji match ,in which he was highest scorer for Mumbai may have been s damp pitch

I heard that too...it was a tough pitch

Also, lets not forget..he is just 17 years..17 year old Jswal would also find it difficult to compete with close to 23 year Jaisawal now..who has got decent experience now..

Though lets not get carried away and keep a close watch..and see how he fares in couple of season..when teams try to work him out and he plays in varying conditions..

Ayush Mhatre smashed a brilliant maiden first-class century.

Batting on a challenging pitch where Maharashtra was dismissed for a mere 126, Mhatre took the onus of himself to get his team back on track after Prithvi Shaw and Hardik Tamore fell cheaply and formed crucial partnerships with captain Ajinkya Rahane and Iyer. Mhatre's innings of 176 off 232 balls, including 22 fours and four sixes.

Don't want to be too harsh on this kid .. but he doesn't look technically too good... But there is lots of time to improve .. he is just 17 years..

He looked more like shreyas Iyer ...esp offside play

Ayush Mhatre has set a new world record for the youngest player to score 150-plus in List A cricket, during  Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Nagaland, bettering Yashasvi Jaiswal's effort.

Mhhatre should play A tours; need to see how he does vs better opposition

Absolutely..need to see how he handles a level up..even if he is avg it will be great learning experience for his age and he can comeback stronger

In what could be a game-changer for both Ayush Mhatre and Chennai Super Kings, the 17-year-old Mumbai opener has been called up for a mid-season trial by the franchise. If successful, Mhatre could be included in the CSK squad

CSK trying to recruit a teenager is blasphemy... Ayush should wait another 17 years and then trial at CSK

Most probably Shaw or Mayank Agarwal will be selected
