There are different layers even in failure

Rank turners, bowling friendly pitches away, batting techniques and approach of Indian batsmen - what it has done is that it has blurred the line between different layers of failures.

3 runs in 16 balls is considered failure.

25 runs in 77 balls is also considered failure.

But later is far far better performance than later.

If a top order batsman scores 20 runs in 60 balls, then he is likely to make it easier for players like Pant who can score 50 runs instead of 10 runs.

Currently there are many players who can possibly still score 20-40 runs in difficult conditions but players score single digit runs are preferred and said that there is no replacement, everyone is failing.

A team with players scoring in single digit will end up with 150-160 total, players with 20s and 30s can get to 270-300 to make match more competitive.

2021 series didn't have any standout performer except Pant, but there were many batsmen playing their part. Pujara with 3 fifties, Rahane with 1 century, Jadeja scoring runs when needed, Shardul,  Sundar and even Mayank scored 38 at Gabba,

Gill Vihari Ashwin, basically everyone contributed atleast in one match.

Pujara was mostly a failure in last tour. But in last two matches at Sydney and Brisbane, he survived 150 balls in each innings and contributed massively to our series win even with not many runs to show.

Yes good point. Pujara helped others score though. Him holding one end helped to soften the ball and made it easier for batsmen coming after him. The problem with current team is they want to score fast and get out.

I think he had three 50s..won't call that a failure even in terms of runs

Pitches in this series have been much more bowler friendly. Number 3 and number 4 have to stand up and deliver in tough conditions.

Kohli has flopped big time in doing it. If he cannot do much, they should look for his replacements.

Guy like Siraj is averaging 23, that should say how much pitches have favored bowlers.

Narrative is built that Sharma and Kohli are failing just like Gill, Pant and others.

Youngsters are not getting out in single digit scores. But clubbing failures make it easy to set narrative that everyone is out of form and Kohli/Sharma aren't different.

Easy to handle for PR group.

Even if the youngsters did well and the senior duo failed, the PR team would still spin it thusly: the seniors attracted most of the attention from the opposition bowlers - who expended most of their energy to dismiss them, and thus allowed the younger players to flourish.

With the kind of PR machinery that Fatman and Kaiser Kohli have, any situation can be spun into a winning position for them

Even though Gill failed in this series and has been failing overseas for long time, he was one of the in form batsmen in Indian side.

It was easy to drop him because he just scored 31 and 28 in low scoring game at Adelaide which was considered same as failure of Rohit Sharma although Gill is far better than Sharma even now.

Realistically Rohit has failed in his last 13 innings (8 matches) whereas Virat has failed in the last 4 out of 5 years, however different yardsticks.

Rohit due to age, fitness will not get the same leeway.

KL is suddenly the Saviour.

It is funny how things can change in 3 months.

KL is not an outright savior either. his returns have also been dropping since first 1-2 tests.

Ro-Ko are done, but would not be dropped.
