Ravichandran Ashwin retires from international cricket

Heart feels heavy when we see such long, illustrious careers coming to an end. We have grown up with them. 

 

I know Ro-Ko have overstayed but when they retire, we will feel quite down. Sooner they retire, more respect we will have for what they have achieved, and the memories they have given us. Not like Dhoni's case where he just dragged on and on and on.

Agreed. Dhoni won us World T20, World and CT and there's still no other cricketer I resent for overstaying his welcome than him. 

 

He played for 4 long years after he was finished.  

 

Yuvraj too played for way too long.

That's where the selectors need to do their jobs and take the tough, objective calls. Leaving it to the player does not work as they are by definition not objective. England did it with Anderson who was refusing to stop playing even after 42 but the selectors forced his hand.

In the corporate world, no one leaves even if their energy, performance etc drops as they grow older. So no reason to expect they will do so in cricket especially now with the huge sums of money, fame etc involved.

But I feel 100+ tests is a long enough career so should not have any regrets of not playing more for India

We are not used to players getting retired without dragging so it seems very strange and difficult to accept but this is timely retirement. Ashwin decided not to be 3rd choice spinner although its different story that other 2 are preferred over him only because their batting is superior who will help protecting incompetent duo.

 

With series at 1-1 and Bumrah having all limelights, Ashwin has silently decided to walk away but once the series is decided and  dust settles down and once we start playing home series again, Ashwin's (Jaddu-Ash) importance will be realised. As soon India will struggle at home bowling out opposition or there will be need of lower order runs, people will realise how indispensable Ashwin was.

Correct. Every sporting career has a "best before" date. As a not especially athletic 38 year old, Ashwin had already reached his a while back.

Ashwin was playing in typical Indian conditions last series and looked ineffective and was outbowled by Sundar so I don't think the current version of Ashwin will be a huge miss in Indian conditions either. Like most sporting teams, India has to develop youngsters to take his place.

The same thing applies to Rohit as an also unathletic 38 year old whose performance has clearly tapered off and is unlikely to be turned around at this age. Kohli is fitter though the skills may not recover there too and there are more youngsters pushing for a place.

IPL big no,T20 cricket needs fresh voices

Generally, in sports, nobody is irreplaceable. Always young ones ready to fill the shoes, just give them the opportunity. 

 

I am sure whoever replaces Ashwin/Jadeja will in their own way step up and do great things.

Some boots are tougher to fill.  We are yet to find even Yuvi's replacement in LOIs. 

 

We might find good spinners, but their batting and clutchness and saving top order again and again will be remembered always.

India has been lucky with the spinners like Kumble, Bhajji, Ashwin & Jadeja. 

For a good part of 25 odd years, we mostly have been a force at home.

 

We may also need to prepare the pacers as well. For few years, we may take a dip in performance as our team is aging.
