tbh they also dropped the youngster McSweeney instead of Khawaja or Labu

Labu has performed better after the 1st Test. He ate up balls in nearly every innings (50+) which is a big thing when our stars can't even last 10 deliveries, and has scored a half century. Khawaja should've been let go but McSweeney averages in 20s as an opener even in domestic cricket. He's more of a middle order bat and Aus selectors hoped he would be able to succeed as an opener. When they saw he won't be able to do that the dropped him and will probably get him into the side as a middle order option when needed - probably to replace Labu or Smith in the future.

Sweeney is not a natural opener. He is more a converted opener. Facing Bumrah upfront is not easy on those pitches.

They shoehorned McSweeney into opening as they did with Aaron Finch six years ago. Although Finch was an opener in the white ball formats, he was a middle-order bat in First Class Cricket (Sheffield Shield, County, etc.) like Sweeney.

 

I'd like to think Sweeney could still have been slotted into #6, especially as they're getting virtually nothing out of Mitch Marsh with either bat or ball. (Even though anyone at #6 is only really a placeholder till Cam Green regains full fitness.)

Even if he score 20 runs against BUmrah, that would be a big success for him.

They did the same stupid thing by promoting SMith as opener. Instead of going for a conventional opener they tried to convert MO batsmen into openers.

India and Australia have aging players and committed enough blunders. India should have asked Rohit to bat at 3 and gill at 5. We have similar mistakes.

McSweeney has an average of 36 odd in first class cricket. He needs to work on that else it won't work out in test cricket.

 

Now Konstas has an average of 42 odd in 11 matches at age 18-19.   Could be interesting but test cricket is a different level.

IMO they don't want to scare McSweeney. 2 more failures going up against Bumrah may scar him permanently. They know Khawaja is done and probably Smith will be gone in a year or so as well. They'll being back McSweeney then in the middle order to replace Smith or Labuschagne as that's McSweeney's natural position. He was forced to become an opener despite him not being a natural opener. They're simply rectifying their mistake and will give McSweeney a longer run in the middle order.

Australia and England both have struggled over the years finding solid opener. Konstas seems solid, better than McSweeney. No harm giving him chance.

Konstas has a loose technique from what I have seen but Australia always wanted a aggressive opener to replace Warner.

 

Konstas while good was in the same U19 batch in which we saw carbon copy of Warner,  Harry Dixon who is a aggressive left hand batter.

I feel Australia should look at him for future.  Maybe replace Khawaja with him for next Ashes
