Was Sydney 2021 greatest ever match saving effort by Indian team?

Sydney 2021 was incredible because all hopes were lost.

We didn't had any batsman left...those who were standing were a bowling allrounder whose back wasn't allowing him to go back and a batter whose hamstring wasn't allowing him to go on front foot.

 

That inns not only tested the technique but also the mental resilience while battling at two front (bowling attack & their own body).

 

Napier 2009 was incredible in its own right, so does 1979 one...but Sydney 2021 for me, will always be at a different level.

 

Infact entire BGT 2020/21 is one of those series which will be remembered for decades. The comment from Justin Langer after Gabba win "you can never underestimate Indians, they have a 1.2 billion cricketers" was one of the most incredible comments I have ever heard from any Australian.

Both were in injured state. That makes that save even more special. Add to the fat that draw paved the way for epic series win.

Pant had a major role in Sydney 2021. He went after the bowling and destroyed their lines. Till he was there even win was possible. It made work of Vihari and Ashwin bit easier, not taking anything away from there. Technically, Jaddu was still to bat.

This was more of almost won game than effort to draw the game.

That Gavaskar’s knock should be the greatest 4th innings of all time.

 

It is just pity that it didn’t end up as winning knock.

 

Gavaskar should be regarded as one the best 4th innings batsman. His last test innings again was just a beauty.

I excluded that because I was looking for games where there wasn't effort to win. Matches where victory was out of sight and draw was only option.

Matches like this. I think Indian team historically hasn't been great at such efforts because of the nature of tracks in India where 1st inning is easier and 4th inning is very difficult. Another reason why we don't see big chases in India and such scenario are mostly possible outside.

but in Sydney 2021 too chase was on till Pant was there. Whole innings was not an exercise in saving the game

Yeah, it turned into match saving effort only for last 2 sessions.

Jaddu had a broken thumb I think (Starc did to him while he was batting in 1st innings, didn't take part in the match after that), wouldn't have lasted long no matter how much he tried. After him, our meme tail. Max 4 overs worth resistance left.

I know but Ashwin and Vihari were also injured still batted. There was hope he could bat too specially when there was no runs pressure

Sure but Ashwin had back injury, Vihari hamstring...tough and both got hit multiple times especially Ashwin against Cummins. Jaddu would have had to bat with one hand like Graeme Smith few years earlier, much tougher IMO than hampered back/hamstring, especially against pacy yorker/bouncer specialist like Starc
