singhvivek141 Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 So as per reports, GG wants Jaiswal to be the next captain for Tests, while selectors are inclined towards Pant. One of the many topics discussed during the recent BCCI review meeting in Mumbai was the future Indian captain in Test and ODI cricket. Rohit Sharma, despite his captaincy coming under scrutiny in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy series amid a meagre return to the bat, reportedly told the selectors that he would remain the captain until the board appoints his successor. However, a fresh report in Dainik Jagran revealed that coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee identified Rohit's captaincy replacement, but found themselves at loggerheads. Who will replace Rohit Sharma as next India captain? On Sunday, the national daily reported that Rohit threw the ball in BCCI's court after telling the selectors that 'he will remain the captain' until the board picks the next skipper in Tests and ODIs. The 37-year-old, whose form left selectors worried, further added that he will fully support his successor. It was then decided that Rohit will remain the captain in ODIs for the Champions Trophy, with the selectors to decide on the future after the end of the tournament. On Monday, a fresh report from Dainik Jagran said that amid the discussion on the possibility of Jasprit Bumrah taking over the reins from Rohit being assessed during the review meeting, the need for a strong vice-captain was also discussed in a bid to manage the fast bowler's workload management. However, while the selectors Rishabh Pant to become the next captain in Test cricket, Gambhir backed Yashasvi Jaiswal. Notably, Pant, who led the Delhi team in domestic cricket, captained the Indian team in the June 2022 home T20I series against South Africa, after the designated skipper KL Rahul was ruled out of the contest due to an injury. Suryakumar Yadav as ODI captain? Suryakumar was appointed as India's T20I skipper in July last year after Rohit retired from the format following the end of the T20 World Cup campaign. However, the right-hander's possibility of taking over the role in ODI cricket after the Champions Trophy was crushed, given that he has yet to cement his place in the ODI format. With India unlikely to take the route of having three captains for three different formats, the report added that Bumrah is likely to lead the Test and ODI team, under the condition that the selectors picks a "strong vice-captain who can lead when Bumrah takes rest, as it happens in Australia with Pat Cummins." https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/gautam-gambhir-wants-yashasvi-jaiswal-next-india-captain-rohit-sharma-loggerheads-ajit-agarkar-selectors-rishabh-pant-101736744757351.html
diga Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 SA took a bold step and started with a 20 year old Graeme Smith as captain when he had probably played 1 test after the Cronje match fixing saga.. Maybe we need such a shock effect for Indian cricket BacktoCricaddict, Norman and singhvivek141 3
Chaos Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 (edited) He cant do any worse than any of these buffoons Edited January 13, 2025 by Chaos Manucrick and singhvivek141 2
Lone Wolf Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 Post England tour we should look to have a young captain.. I agree with Jaiswal's choice. Chaos and singhvivek141 2
Vk1 Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 Yet again best batsman becomes captain. Really lazy stuff from BCCI & Coach. Or do they think that no one else is assured of selection other than Bumrah & Yashasvi? Are they not sold on Pant? His attitude is not too different from Sehwag Manucrick 1
Lord Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 Jaiswal is too green. Pant is the right option apart from Boomrah Manucrick 1
sensible-indian Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 (edited) From what little I saw of Pant's captaincy in IPL, he is a poor tactician. Yes, he can change and improve... However historically speaking, poor tacticians don't go on to become great tacticians. This is T20. Test is a whole different ball game. Strategy matters way more in tests than tactics. Sean Bradley Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 I had really liked Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy, don't remember which tournament that was. But he was spot on with bowling changes, field placements etc. Sanju Samson is another good captaincy material. P.S. I am taking these names irrespective of them cementing their place in the teams, my assessment is purely judgement based on body language, strategy, personality, etc.
Laaloo Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 I want Karun Nair to be captain BacktoCricaddict 1
Prabhdeep Singh Posted January 13, 2025 Posted January 13, 2025 S Iyer if he fixes short ball issues and returns to test side.
First class Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 Will be a risky business to make Jaiswal Captain or VC at this point, let him be more established and mature . If not Pant , make Rahul, Bumbrah's deputy, for the time being.
StraightDrive26 Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 Do not want Jaiswal as the captain of the side. Don't think he is mature enough to captain the side. Cannot be compared to G Smith. G Smith is an anomaly who became successful despite not captaining too much in the domestic scene. It cannot be taken as an example. This is exactly the legacy of Virat/Shastri and Rohit/GG. Yeah there is Bumrah but again both the captains did not groom their deputy. Virat never allowed any young player to settle in the playing XI and kept swapping them out. Rohit cannot be blamed at least for not identifying a captain as he hasn't been there long enough. During Virat's time as captain Rahane, Rohit, Rahul & Pujara played a lot and not many middle order bats made a mark. All the players who played in Virat's team were of his same age and it left no successor who could take the team forward like Virat did when Dhoni called it quits. Every era had a young player who was ready to take over the reigns, but this side has none. So logically if we keep Jaiswal aside, it leaves only Pant and Bumrah. One hasn't given a great account of himself as a captain and the other has a fragile body which means he might miss more games than he plays. India find themselves in quite a pickle as things aren't looking that rosy in the captaincy front. The one thing India can do is pick a player from the domestic scene and make them the captain. New Zealand once did that with Lee Germon, SA did with Smith. These players were identified as being strong and capable of leading a team. Surya could have been that but again he does not warrant a place in the Test team. There is Sai Kishore from Tamil Nadu, There is Tilak Varma who captains Hyderabad Ranji team and has a good FC record. Most of the FC teams also have no vision in choosing their leaders. Most of the FC teams have captains who are 30+ and have no chance of making the national team in the future. At least I hope the selectors have the knowledge and the capability to identify good leaders.

There are much better candidates in Abhimanyu Easwaran / Prabsimran singh

Anyone who they feel is a good candidate, who does not bow down to seniors and is strong and can hold their own can be made captain. Greame Smith was made captain for the same reason.
Gollum Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 No need when Pant, Bumrah are already there. Make him VC and groom him to take over in 4 years time. Knowing BCCI, they must have earmarked Gill to be all format captain for next 10 years. New guy 1
kosingh Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 Really wish Gill had developed liked we had hoped. Turned out to be a total fraud.
wanted_desi Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 Bumrah can be Captain, and you can keep rotating VC spot till you find someone with potential as Bumrah will miss some matches here and there.

I prefer instinctive captains over the same process ones.

He has been nothing but mature for his age since he debuted
