Mumbai's star-studded batting lineup has flopped quite spectacularly in their Ranji Trophy Group A match against Jammu and Kashmir. India captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer are among those who are either regulars in the Test team or contenders to be in it and they were all dismissed without disturbing the scorers too much in both innings.

 

According to former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Basit Ali, Iyer's shot to be dismissed in the first innings was the worst of the lot.

"The worst shot in that innings (Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match) was of Shreyas Iyer. The team lost six wickets and the mid-on was pushed back, but you still hit it right there," said Basit on his Youtube channel. "The easiest way to dismiss Shreyas Iyer in the Champions Trophy is to have the mid-on back because he is surely going to go for a big hit."

Iyer was dismissed for a score of 11 off seven deliveries choosing to go for a big shot off Yudhvir Singh and getting caught at mid-on. He had hit a four and a six in his short innings before that. In Mumbai's second innings, Iyer scored 17 runs in 16 balls before being caught behind off Auqib Nabi.

Mumbai's international stars fail to impress

This match marked Rohit's return to domestic cricket after a decade and yet, his dismissals were eerily similar to how he fell during the five-Test tour of Australia in which he a woefull 6.20 in five innings. He fell after scoring three runs in 19 balls in the first innings. In the second, he smashed three back-to-back sixes and then fell going for a fourth on a score of 28 off 35 balls.

 

Rohit's opening partner for Mumbai, and usually for India, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell after scoring four runs in eight balls in the first innings and 26 runs in 51 balls in the second. Mumbai, in fact, found themselves shockingly tottering at 57/7 in the 18th over of the first innings before Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian managed to give them something to bowl at.

He has the attitude of a Vivian Richards and ability of a Shreyas Iyer,offcourse not brute ability to send even the mishits

Afghans don't at the moment coz they have other issues. But once thats sorted, they too will show their true colours.

 

SL is our best bet, despite our differences they don't "hate" us per say.

We have lowest of shatrubodh,that's we have been facked multiple times in similar fashion since time immemorial

Whatever it is or whoever it came from, it looks like he took the criticism and did something to fix the problem. I haven't watched the highlights yet, but reading the commentary after the match, it seems like he handled the fast short ball pretty well.

 

Good on him, and hope to see continued improvement.

yeah it was a weird innings, handled pace and short stuff well but got out tamely to spin

He has been working hard on that for some time. His ego was the problem. He plays pull shot better than so many guys from past.  Many of our players would only lap pull. THis guy is crisp with pull when it is at certain height. His big issue is he tries to pull everything that is short. Second issue is sucker punch full deliveries while he is waiting for short ball.

S.Iyer ---he has 5 tons and 19 fifties in around 60 odis, would say its been decent fr him and Ind too. Ind has not had a good number 4 for sometime and he is been the best of all the batters that have been tried.

 

In odis he has time he can pick anc chose which sort ball to hit and which to leave. He needs to be smart no need to play short ball unless he can ramp it over wkt-keeper

 

Not sure of his intnl quality. but he has shown best temperament compared to any1 new tried in odis. He has played cautiusly when wkts were down and played aggressively when team needed it-not like playing for his personal scores.

 

if he does not sort out the short-ball issue he will be replaced soon as TM and selectors would be reluctant to take him to sena tours and then getting out to short ball here and there in Ind will cement him as some1 who can not play pace.

i will take Shreyas anywhere in the world as INDIA's number 4 except in Australia , England and South Africa ( as bowlers bowl too many bouncers)

 

he wil bat beautifully as no 4 for india but in england , australia and africa, he wont suceed.

On Dubai pitches, expect a player like him to shine. Has had a good career till now despite his technical shortcomings. Kela, Gill, Shaw are 10x more talented than him, Kela has exceptional technique but look at how he is underperforming.

People like kela are full-time pussy,he had a decent tour down under should have used that as confidence booster but tends to create unnecessary pressure on himself

Has been backed quite strongly no reason to play like pussy scared of loosing his place(20th Nov 2023 was the time he should have been kicked out of the lois scheme of things)

He always does well at start of the tour, and then fades away. A test average of 32-33 for a specialist batsman (that too not a regular opener) is unacceptable even for a side like Bangladesh.

Under the circumstances, he did his job very well and helped the team win. He is no Viv Richards, but he is no 2024-25 RoKo either.
