Trichromatic Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 Aakashdeep bowled 14 out of first 28 overs which England faced and picked up 4 wickets. India maximised new ball gains with late declaration. Had they declared an hour early, it would have been different story altogether. rollingstoned, tweaker and rkt.india 3
rkt.india Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 Things fell into place. It may not have been entirely planned. It became possible because of how Jadeja batted after pant again threw his wicket. Had Jadeja tried same and lost his wicket, we may have bundled out early and things could have been different. tapandrun and New guy 1 1

Yup people were crying about his SR like it's T20 but it was important to prevent a collapse and tire their fielders

Yep, you still wanted to ball somewhat new on Day 5 morning which Deep exploited with bounce and seam getting two quick wickets. Everything fell into place in this test. Let's credit TM when it is due (except Krishna and Nair's selections) Lord 1
adi B Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 Declaration was late, make no mistake! india should have declared 10-12 overs earlier and set them 530 odd to chase. Had it rained for another hour or so today ,you all would have rushed to chop off Gambhir's head Manucrick and Chakdephatte 2

Idea was to bat them out of the game so they can only play for draw which they can't with their techniques except Root
Ultimate_Game Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 I still think we should've declared an hour ago when we were leading by 520. There wasn't time for Eng to get to 520 no matter how well they batted given they were batting on Day 5. Plus it protects yourself against rain/weather delays. Also, if there's a partnership, it gives you time with the 2nd new ball. This was a very defensive approach. I'm glad we won but we gotta give our bowlers time given Bumrah wasn't there, and Prasidh is shyte. Vk1 and adi B 2
vvvslaxman Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 I figured this out purely based on the timing. They wanted a split spell. Lord 1

If you're going to be so scared that you need to set a target of 600+ you'll end up drawing a lot of matches which you could've won. This is why we let so many winnable matches go. Recall one in NZ where we kept on batting in late 2000s and another against Eng around the same time. We were so "safety first" that we lost opportunity to win. At that time it made sense as we didn't know how to win away at that time. Now we should be looking to win. 520 gives you enough in the bank to start bowling negatively with Jadeja and Sundar targeting leg stump lines on the 5th day. I'm sorry but we risked missing out on a win by being extremely cautious. Chakdephatte and Manucrick 2

Why give them a sniff? Also with England there is more chance of win if they are forced to bat for a draw. They don't have the techniques or patience to bat long(except Root). We were playing a rookie attack without Bumrah and that could easily have gone awry Edited July 6, 2025 by Lord express bowling and vishalvirsingh 2
putrevus Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 (edited) It was moronic batting by Jadeja. If he cannot take even singles when field was so wide spread then there is a big problem. He is purely playing as batsman. Not every day team score 1000 runs. They got lucky with their defensive declaration. Last test they simply failed to get wickets with new ball which is vital. 370 would have been hard to chase then also. Edited July 6, 2025 by putrevus Ultimate_Game, Vk1 and Manucrick 3

For India it is twice bitten always shy ( Old Trafford 2022 and Headingley 2025). If India would have won either of the 2 ( which they should have) we would have declared at 550. Also the 300 run partnership in 50 odd overs in the first innings scared them.. and lets be practical everyone tried a safety first approach when 1-0 down. Lord 1

Actually when you're 1-0 down you gotta be more aggressive. I can understand being cautious to protect the lead but when you know you're behind and have a great chance to even the series, you would want to take the chance. Also hated the way Jadeja batted before tea. If we wanted to take a 600 run lead then Jadeja should've pressed accelerator before tea. He was crawling along when we were 450+ up with 5-6 wkts in hand and a well set Gill for company! Manucrick 1

While chasing 370 they didn't have to worry about RR. India could've easily bowled negative lines here to slow them down with Jadeja and Sundar. To me the risk-reward simply wasn't there. Once the target crosses 400, the chances to chase diminishes exponentially and at 500 the risk is almost nil. We should've declared when 510-520 ahead to give bowlers more time. We lucked out due to an unbelievable Akash else it could've been a case of so near and yet so far. You don't get into such strong positions away from home that often and it would've been a pity had we missed the chance to win.

The required run rate would have been same. As I said they also chased 378 losing only 3 wickets. And those were when we had Bumrah. This was complete rookie attack hence needed a cushion. Even Prasidh could bowl as there was no pressure of getting hit. 110 overs is plenty of overs to bowl a side out when they are looking for a draw
