No one deserves a farewell test series. It's an antiquated and useless concept. They played and were handsomely compensated for doing their job. When they retire, the players (friends) can throw a party and have speeches. And move on.

TOP TOP post.

Nah, based on how he did against NZ and Aus, no reason to think he was better than Sai or Karun. Guy stopped working on his flaws, kept getting out the same way, even on these flat pitches, he wouldn't have had the hunger to go big.

Kohli scored 100 on flat pitch of Sydney.

He would easily scored couple of centuries in England also.

Once you mentally check out, can't perform no matter how much the odds are stacked in your favor. After losing captaincy, he was playing test cricket as if he was doing a favor to the team, would drop out of the squads at short notice for no reason whatsoever, missed 15 odd tests just in the last 5 years, and not due to injury.

Anyhow no need of farewell drama in a team sport.

He would fail on pitches which are slightly helpful to bowlers, but he will still manage to score good runs on flat pitches.

Better than Sai and Karun.

Kohli couldnt score zilch in indian pitches against nz where Sarfraz khan, rishabh pant all scored runs. He was playing the wrong line to aijaz and santner time and again. He would have been nicked out in England as well.

Only 1 inning where pitch was good for batting. Sarfaraz couldn't do anything in rest of the innings.

Pant is anyway all conditions batsman.

England series was run fest and one of the flattest conditions Indian team has played in long time.

He has moved on from cricket and  he should stay away from cricket now for good .But if bozos like Rahul could score 500 plus runs he sure would have done that easily .

English bowling attack was putrid and pitches were flat as pancakes. He missed out on home England series also.1000 runs which were there for taking but he did not want to take it.

But he does not deserve any farewell test or series.

No he does not. The last 5 years of his Test career was a farewell to Virat. Sachin was given one series as farewell as he was asked to retire as well after 2 bad years in Tests. Virat enjoyed 5-6 years of bad batting in Tests, that was enough farewell for him. People talk a lot about farewell for Sachin but it was the way for BCCI to ask Sachin to retire gracefully before the overseas leg of India started in 2013. Sachin had a very bad 2 years in Tests where he averaged 35 or so and Virat had 6. So no he does not need a farewell. The fact that he played for 6 years averaging 30 seems good enough farewell.

Ask him to open the innings & score 500+...

There were reports that bcci intended to ask sachin to retire and there may have been talks behind so he retired. And that the last time he was playing for Ind. So in many ways bcci made sure he retires.

Does it call for a need for a farewell series --no.

What does it mean having a farewell series and deserving ???

In kolhi's case he will still play for Ind in different format. And as mentioned by other posters its a dated concept. Previously it meant something for teammates, viewers when some1 retired. It was like they are going to share the dressing room for the last time or play with/against them for the last time and that player will not be seen around.

Now with 3 different formats and so many leagues what values does farewell have, they will see same player in different format will play/against them and then that player will more likely become a professional player playing different leagues making more mny than he is currently doing.

Now concept has no emotional or sentimental value anymore.

yes boards can have a separate event or name something after that player down the line

Karun Nair was nothing special in the series, but he has earned his chance. Kohli didn't, he was on borrowed time for years.

Farewell series is when players in good form announce ahead of time that a series or a game is their last one as a courtesy to fans. The Ashes series of 2006 featuring McGrath and Warne is a very good example. Washed up players expecting a farewell like a charity is ridiculous.

Kohli's hobnobbing with Bakis in the champions trophy final feels like a stab in the back

Let go of it already.

We've trashed Pak multiple times after that, and in many cases Kohli has had a huge contribution.

No chance of current Kohli even replicating even a third of what KL did, that too as opener.

Yes. I would arrange a test against Zim or Afg/BD for his last farewell test. I know he gets bashed here so often but this guy gave us so much memories and happiness to cherish. Least we could do is give him his farewell test.

Had he played the 2024 home series against Eng, his trajectory would have been different. We saw vintage Kohli in RSA just a month before on treacherous RSA tracks against peak Rabada. A 500 runs series with 2-3 centuries after that (in a marquee series) could have helped him have a resurgence, he definitely would have done much better against BD/NZ/Aus later that year with regained confidence and fire in his belly. Only has himself to blame, an ATG legacy (10k runs at 50 avg) was offered on the platter but he preferred to vacation in London.

He struggled vs spin though. Doubt SA series would translate into success vs spin at home. Infact in his absence we were able to launch Sarfaraz
