Yes, traditional Mysore pak can spike blood sugar significantly.  It is considered a high glycemic index (GI: 77) food due to its high content of refined sugar and carbohydrates (approximately 17g of carbs per small serving), which lead to rapid glucose absorption.

While the gram flour (besan) and high ghee content can slightly slow digestion, the overall impact is a rapid increase in blood sugar levels.  Therefore, it is generally not advisable for individuals managing diabetes.

To reduce the impact:

Consume only a very small portion.

Always pair it with a source of protein (like paneer or yogurt) or fiber (like a salad) to slow down sugar absorption.

Consider sugar-free versions made with sweeteners like stevia.

It is always in comparison, lentil based jaggery sweets have GI index compared to milk based sugar syrup used in Bengali sweets. Mysore causes less spike than any others compared.

Not entirely true. Coconut barfis ( also called as kopra pak )  have lower GI because of the fibre in coconut.

by default , mysore pak is ghee mysore pak  :poink:

The "Ghee Factor" and Blood Sugar Response
Interestingly, Mysore Pak often shows a lower immediate glucose spike compared to maida-based sweets like Gulab Jamun.
  • Delayed Absorption: The massive amount of ghee (which has a glycemic index of zero) can slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream.
  • Besan Content: Made from gram flour (besan), Mysore Pak contains more fiber and protein than refined flour desserts, which naturally has a lower glycemic index.
  • Comparison: In some personal monitoring tests, 100g of Mysore Pak caused a significantly lower blood sugar rise (approx. 11 mg/dL) than other festive treats like Gajar ka Halwa or Moong Dal Halwa.

Pure Ghee...thats the right word.

Most Ghee which we see in the market are adulterated.

Pure Desi Ghee...they not only have zero GI and GL...but even lower the LDL Cholesterol.

We used to have laddos in childhood, full of desi Ghee.

So much that during summers couple of ladoos used to be our breakfast before stepping out for 3-4 hours of cricket. No diabetes nothing.

Now, even eating a namkeen made up of Palm oil is gonna choke the insulin.

I would love to see an actual comparative analysis with proper experimental design, large sample sizes and statistics. TikTok Insta anecdotes are inadequate.

Good idea for a research project; I'll propose it to my students for next semester.

Choose a bong sweet lover vs a mysore pak lover for researching each other
