Ben Stokes to retire from international cricket after third Test

Ben Stokes has announced a shock retirement from international cricket on the penultimate day of England's Test series decider against New Zealand. It brings a 15-year England career and a four-year tenure as Test captain to a close.

Stokes did not rule out the possibility that the ongoing third Test at Trent Bridge could be his last in his pre-match press conference, and is understood to have told his team-mates and the ECB his decision on Sunday morning before play.

His decision comes after he missed the second Test at The Oval while the ECB and the Cricket Regulator investigated his late-night celebrations at a Chelsea nightclub following their win at Lord's. Stokes was handed a written warning but cleared of any further wrongdoing.

Stokes bowled two lengthy spells as England attempted to fight their way back into the third Test against New Zealand.

That 2027 world cup is going to be one dull boring affair.

Might as well end the odi format now

Nah. ICC tournaments in SA are always success.. Stokes had retired from ODIs anyway after 2023 wc.

Dont care. Dont like the guy.

Good all rounder specially because he was a fast bowling one. But too much tantrums.. drama queen.

Cant live without parties.

Wont be surprised if he was given a hint, and he left

Before pandemic, he was on course to becoming an ATG, even Botham class. Steep decline after that, compounded by injuries.

2019 was his year, Headingley, WC win.

Both were in England where he remained good.

Ashwin owned him in Tests in India

This is how you retire, someone tell this to our oldies.

By throwing a tantrum after being caught drunk fighting, being banned for one game, then making the last test all about him, opening the batting and throwing his wicket and influencing others to do the same when test and series is on the line?

I am critical of our oldies hanging on but come on now, this d sucking of Stokes is better left to the english guys

Ben Chokes is not a particularly nice character by all accounts.

Has an active PR machine behind him that hides his alcoholism and propensity for violence.

Diminishing returns for several years now, was dreadful in recent Ashes playing dour & defensive cricket.

England will miss Stokes a lot more than accumulator Root. Players like Stokes, who can influence the game with the bat, ball and as a leader are far harder to replace.

He and KP were arguably England's two most naturally gifted cricketers of the last three decades.

Stokes was box office.
