Kedar did not perform in IPL up to the mark and that was a big issue.

Luckily or Unluckily IPL has become one of the deciding factors for selection into India XI.

true. Had players like him and Sanju Samson performed in IPL last year. they would have been picked faster.

However, this is not fully true for Jadhav, who has had a good List A average always, so tweaker is right that some players, even though they might have sucked recently in IPL, surely deserve chances at some time of their career.

But we have to remember that there was a time when it was just hard to break into Indian team with Kohli being the new Indian player who had just announced his official before the world cup 2011, and we having players like Sehwag, Gambhir, Tendulkar, Yuvraj, Raina among whom most were doing extremely well and actually did well even in the 2011 world cup.

Some of them were just plain unlucky to be having their best days at the time when the 2011 world cup winning team was playing.

Our ODI team till 2012/2013 was among the best and there were hardly many spots open. Also, please don't include Raina in the 'old' category. If he can regain his form he can still play for another 4-5 years easy.

Gagan Khoda anyone? ALthough his strike rate was pretty poor, he played only two matches, averaged 57.

Harvinder Singh.. 24 wickets in 16 ODIs avg 25

I don't  like the idea of the selector of selecting old players. They should make a comparison of the players they have selected from the old brigade & new.

They will find that Bumrah,Pandya,Karun,Jayant have performed well wheras Gambhir,Harbhajan,Raina 's experiment has failed badly.

The selectors as well as fans should know every player has a shelf life .As he grow old his reflexes becomes slow & he is not that same player anymore.

In our country there are many young players  ready to grab a position in the national team .The selector should not create a atmosphere that a certain player is irreplaceable.

There is different yardstick for different players. Yesterday Jadeja played a irresponsible shot  to get out inspite of him being in the team for a long time .But if the same mistake was done by Pandya ,many would have written him down. Jadeja has been doing this every time but he has never have to pay for such calous irresponsible attitude.

Jadhav & Pandey are not assured of their places in the squad even if they score a 100 but some players are always their in the team after playing once in a blue moon inning.

Countless. We have a LOT of talent.

Is it conceivable that a piddly country like Sri Lanka, smaller than Tamil Nadu, should produce so many decent and world class cricketers, while India with 50-60 times the resources and now finances should not produce atleast 3-4 world beating teams ?

It just goes to show the magnitude of how screwed up our selection process is at the grass roots level.

14 times the money and a far better domestic structure.

There will always be 10-15 guys competing for the final 3-4 spots in the XI. Worthy guys will always be left out. The size of India compounds the problem. It is a lot easier picking the best XI in a country of 50 million than in a country of billion+.

But what bothers me is that clearly non deserving guys like Stuart Binny make the XI because of nothing but having right dad.

Another thread to bash the selectors.  Bash everybody.  Bash Nasser Hussain because he doesn't fellate Indian cricket constantly in his commentary.  Bash the selectors for not selecting XYZ in year 123.  Does anyone EVER open a thread appreciating selectors for identifying the players who become the stars that they do?  VK was identified early - so was Rohit Sharma.  Both made the national team in their late teens.  So did Yuvraj.  Shami was rapidly brought into the Indian team, didn't spend years languishing at FC level.

But no, let's bash the selectors.  Its a popular sentiment.  Go for it.

we need to revamp our list A domestics
it shouldn't take 10 years for a guy to play 100 list A games
otherwise we wont find guys like kedar at young age

there should be 20 games a year at least

It is the selectors'  specialized jobs  to identify talent and bring them in at the current time.  Bringing in players like Tendulkar, Kohli, Yuvraj  can be done by mothers of Indian selectors   : )      Keeping players  in FC cricket to make them more  " ready products " is more a thought process of the last 4 or 5 years. In those times, when a talent was found, and he came from the " right "  region, he was picked as early as possible.

So, let us study who are the borderline cases who have been picked by selectors based on " Cricket acumen not-101 "    : )    in recent times     ?

Bringing in Hardik Pandya, even though he did not have good FC stats, was a good decision. But, he was originally left out of the Australia A tour by the same selectors, Vijay Shankar got injured and Dravid specifically asked for him according to media reports. Then, he was recommended by Dravid to Kumble for the seamer-allrounders role....Kumble himself said so....and that means it was not the selectors who took the initiative of a good decision.

Jayant Yadav was again a Dravid suggestion.

Nair was a good one by the selectors.  So was Shardul Thakur IMHO.

Bumrah was based on superb domestic performance but still deserves some credit and somewhat similar case with Rahul.

Looks like Kedar Jadhav has not got his due.  Not many good pacers and spinners have been picked up in recent times.... but quite a few good talents are coming trough nowadays.

Now, we are seeing Vinay Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Mohit Sharma, Ashish Nehra etc. being tried for non-important practice matches.....which could have been used to develop new guys like Siraj who was the 2nd highest wicket taker this Ranji season among seamers and said to be pacy....these sort of selections are bound to bring out dissatisfaction among fans.

India has been lacking high SR batsmen in the lower-middle order in LOIs for quite some time.  How many have been brought in  and tried to fill this gap  ?

Looks like it is a mixed bag really in recent times......with a little bit more negatives than positives.

It is also true that some players keep on getting chances despite failures and some others with potential are dropped after one or two bad performances or do not even get to play a single game.

We are yet to get out traditional thinking in cricket. We are afraid of taking risk . We think of safety before results.

By We i mean(Selectors, coaches at most levels, ex-cricketers, huge fan base)

1. Lack of understanding of fast Bowling -We the lack of understanding of fast bowling. We still look for bowlers with line n length having set xamples of Mcgrath or pollock. There is no understanding we have what was mcgrath or pollock. They consider a bowlers with less pace more consistent which will obvious be the case as its diff to control the pace of 140K+.

Even Bangladesh now wont pick bolwers like - Krishna das, vinay, kaul, mithun, Arvind time n again for Main domestic competition or A-tours.

How many of these selectors have had good international career to understand how much does pace make a diff. IF an Exp person like Sandeep patil couldnt how do u expect someone like MSK PRasad

To understand fast bowling u need to have the love for it, Ganguly was one guy who had the love for pace bowlers and now kohli looks like one.

2. Living still in denial of the evolution of the game-  ODI cricket evolves every 4 yr in a gr8 way. We still confuse formats. In 2007, we send a team of youngsters for a sake of formality in t20wc. That was our level of seriousness. How difficult is it to understand the need of bowlers with mystery like kuldeep is. Kuldeep shud have debuted by now. Another example how Rahane ic continued with by having and example that he is from dravid school and he ll come good like him. But Modern cricket has changed , even dravid wud have found diff to find a place in Today's ODi setup of most sides. Selectors Still overrate  domestic number without considering that if the person would be fit for international cricket or does he even have the X-factor. Ranji stats are taken into consideration while selecting team for Odi n t20, why not domestic odi n t20s.

Traditional cricket and denial of evolution of cricket hurted England in short formats for years and now i feel its somewhat not allowing us to be where can we be with the Potential we have.

Potential available - Pant, Sarfraz, Samson, Kishen, iyer, kuldeep, Nathu, Rajpoot, Avesh, Aniket, Sanghawan, Siraj, Krunal, Hooda......now this is some serious talent we have that could take our cricket to a diff level and we have the captain n coach to set high bench mark n dedication n work ethics. Now its the selectors duty to be brave. Lets see if Someone like Kuldeep is on the plane to Ct2017

Even when they did manage to pick out good players once in a blue moon we had kaptaans who refused to play them

Can you be specific about the good players which were not played by the captain? We can have a good list of players here lets see which ones you are talking about?
