The 36-year-old star had already quit Tests in 2010 and ODI cricket after the 2015 World Cup but still skippered the Pakistan Twenty20 team at the 2016 world championships in India. He stepped down as captain after the tournament although he retained his slender hopes of continuing his career in the sport's shortest format as a player. Afridi had been a fan favourite since he burst onto the scene in 1996, striking a 37-ball century against Sri Lanka in only his second match to set a world record that was unbeaten for 17 years. He became known as a bowling all-rounder in the second half of his career and was instrumental in Pakistan's early successes in Twenty20, including their 2009 victory. Afridi finishes his international career having played just 27 Test matches which yielded 1,176 runs with a highest score of 156 and 48 wickets. He played 398 one-day internationals with 8,064 runs, a highest score of 124 while taking 395 wickets with his leg spin. I will continue to be available for Pakistan in twenty20 and will continue to be available for PSl for my team Peshawar Zalmi. Afridi said goodbye in fitting fashion as well, after a 28-ball 54 for Peshawar Zalmi that nearly pulled off a remarkable chase against Karachi Kings in the ongoing PSL. I have played with seriousness and in a professional way for my country." http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/story/1083401.html ------------------ Well, nothing 'international' was on offer anyways so in a way his ODIs/T20Is career was already over but still a good thing to publicly announce... 2 decades of international cricket is a massive career, I personally always rated his bowling a bit higher than his batting which he hardly ever changed... Anyone likes it or not, coaches/captain warn him or not, match situation demands or not... he will play just 'his game' and wont ever change his 'technique'. His 23 ODI batting avg is too low for anyone to be called an 'all-rounder' but I think it was just because of his mindless start right from ball-1, number of inngs he got out below 10 are just Massive (would probably be more than anyone else in world?)... He always had strange cricket-fan following of either love or hate... but no doubt he has been one of the most popular cricketer of modern times who even today got a huge fan-following which just never depended on hi skills or performance... Never been a 'fan' of him but thoroughly enjoyed, may be like everyone else whenever he 'clicked' but for some reason I always wanted him to play a bit more of Test cricket, might sound odd! but in my opinion he was not bad at all for little he played... He would've been more than useful esp here in Asian conditions... Now after retirement, its obv his personal choice but instead of becoming any cricket 'expert' or coach etc, I would like if he can utilize his fan following like Imran Khan to do some philanthropy work for which he seems already active since recent times, I believe he can't ever become someone who is 'financially corrupt' so wont mind him even joining politics... Ultimate_Game Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I'm a bit confused as didn't Afridi quit intl cricket after the last WT20 event? I thought I heard him saying that the game against Aus in WT20 would be his last intl game or some such. So what is this new retirement news?
