There are two issues with this . The first one is that , you cannot be attacking all the time and he needs to realise there are times he needs to go defensive to win matches . Secondly , bowling pace bowlers does not make you aggressive . His job is not to make his fast bowlers look good , but rather to win matches and it does not matter if Umesh or Ashwin takes wickets . There is a pretty staright forward formula to win matches for India at home . Its spin bowling . The fast bowlers will and should always play the supporting role . Fans love Kohli's captaincy because it has so many positives that a few negatives (which he rectifies anyway) shouldn't matter much. Still its a draw only. Not like we lost. If Ashwin had picked up his quota of wickets in this match, we could have won. I agree Kohli should do what is needed more. Should have bowled more Jaddu on Day 2 Bangalore and bowled spin in tandem in Day 5 Ranchi. Edited March 20, 2017 by sensible-indian
G_B_ Posted March 20, 2017 Author Posted March 20, 2017 I think we need to keep in mind the bowlers were not good either. So its not that kohli cost India the win. But its a general observation Sent from my Wileyfox Swift using Tapatalk

He was giving away singles and so the pressure was not there. That's why seamers were asked to bowl a bit outside off to Smith so as not to give away runs and got Jaddu to attack from the other end who looked most likely to pick wickets. We did miss Shami though. He would have made a world of difference. Mosher, Vilander, Gollum and 1 other 4
Vilander Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Ishant was crap yesterday, Aussies batted well against spinners but Ishant was utter tripe. Low wide and not attacking the stump as all, plenty of no balls, he will loose pace in the next few international overs its that Rhythm swing that he always has, getting sick of this now. He should be replaced by Shami next match. Ashiwn and Kohli had a very poor match and no Shami yet India came within 1-2 hrs of play to win thats pretty good.

Seamers were bowling wide to Smith before Ashwin was even brought into the attack so as to make sure he doesn't score runs. That was a deliberate strategy.
coffee_rules Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 kohli shd have started with 2 spinners just like last evening. The new ball bounces more and hard to nego. But this is with hindsight On such a placid pitch we came close to winning. . Nothing to complain. speedheat 1
Yoda-esque Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 I think he is doing good, though I think he needs to be selective in his overt aggression. Sometimes, that can rile up opponents and they in turn can raise their game. speedheat 1
sandeep Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Virat's captaincy is clearly still a work in progress. But more than his captaincy, his and his deputy's failures are responsible for this outcome - if one of them had scored 50-odd, we would have declared with a 200 run lead a couple of hours earlier - and it would be very different ball game. But what's done is done. On to the next game.

Honestly , I love Virat as a player but I cant find that many positives in his captaincy . with every test hes been adding new blunders , be it his team selections like picking players like Dhawan/Rohit ahead of Vijay/Pujara , picking Five batsmen or his bowling changes . Everything tells me hes trying to live up to this tag of being an aggressive captain , but his idea of aggressive captaincy ( like a lot of fans ) is picking hacks like Rohit/Dhawan over proven test players cos they can apparently score fast ? playing 5 batsmen on bowler friendly pitches which I hear you need to win a test match and bowling fast bowlers on spin friendly pitches , cos its pretty cool to see fast bowlers bowl at 145 mph ? . You dont see issue with the kind of thinking here ? How can you say that its just a draw ? I was almost sure of a 4-0 win looking at this Oz side , even a 2-1 win is embarrassing against this side . We have not even started playing away . Forever Indian and Ultimate_Game 2

This is not a ODI where you keep chaning your bowlers cos they concede a few singles or couple of boundries . This is where the captain needs to be aggressive .

Only Jadeja looked like getting a wicket. The bowler's job from the other end was to keep it tight and not give away any runs to allow pressure to build but Ashwin failed to do that.
Laaloo Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 I think if we had 10 overs extra on Day 4 we would have won. This same thing happened in the Windies match. Windies lost quick wickets on day 4 before bad light or rain and then Roston chase batted all day 5 to draw the match.

Team management should've realized that it took nearly 4 days for both teams to complete their 1st innings so it will take some time to bowl Aussies out. Even if India had declared half an hour after tea, India wouldn't have lost th ematch but would've put Aussies under a lot more pressure to save the game. kubrickian 1
The Realist Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Can't expect to win games consistently with a 3 man bowling attack especially when one of them is carrying an injury. The burden is too much. Should call up RP Singh or un-retire Dhoni and have him play as a bowling all-rounder.
