This is the best opportunity in decades to move manufacturing out of china and stop  the complete dependency on chinese supply chain. The question is which other countries are ready to step up?

Apparently tesla is looking for a manufacturing base for its trucks. I think they will shun china and do everything in the US itself, people will be hungry for jobs once this mess is over

China has economic power. A strong economy buys you respect.

The west is unhappy with India's protectionist economic policies, many of which are impacting the businesses of western corporations. Vodafone is a classic example, but there are other instances. They will always oppose India's government.

And before you attack China, keep in mind that China is able to handle external threats quite effortlessly. Look at how they handle muslims, for example. They are re-writing the quran, just to keep them in line. In India, we struggle to contain a mob of 500 muslims throwing petrol bombs at the police in poverty-ridden muslim neighborhoods.

India has not done the preparation to put itself in a position to benefit from the supply-chain shifts. And it only has itself to blame.

India chose to play games for 80 years, and missed a lot of great opportunities that came and went. We chose to demand that coca-cola give us their "formula" in the 70s, then we chose to play masjid-mandir, then other crap, in the most recent self-goals - "demonetization".  6 years of "Modiji" and not a single significant labor reform passed.  No major SEZ up and running. Even in his preferred home state of Gujarat, where Dholavira was approved and funded a decade ago.

You are right, it is a "SHAME".

Already, US Embassies all over the world are asking around for masks and other PPE supplies.

What the * timeline do I live in, where the US is begging China for help.

Lol. how do any of you geniuses know that china spread this deliberately?

They deliberately suppressed information for multiple weeks, instead of raising the alarm and communicating to WHO and UN.  Which are their legal obligations under international health care regulations.  Instead they pressured the world including UN, to NOT cut off travel to China.  They made the WHO publish claims that the disease does NOT transmit from human to human - on January 14 - by then they already knew it was spreading that way. They concealed the fact that frontline medical staff were getting sick in high numbers - a fact that would have made the WHO announce much more stricter restrictions on travel to China right away.

I dont have the link right now, but there are studies that show that if Chinese govt had stopped lying 3 weeks earlier - which they could and should have - up to 95% of the fatalities could have been avoided.  And we would definitely not be in this global economic crisis that we are.

Only thing is that quick honest action by China would have saved the world, but they still would have suffered a bit.  Was it just simple incompetence and the horrible secretive tendencies of communist govt to lie and hide? Or was it a cold blooded calculation, to allow this virus to spread all over, knowing that the resulting crisis will see China's key role in manufacturing critical supplies become even more stronger, that drove their decisions?

I can't claim to know.

But China's government is directly and criminally responsible for this.

WHO never raised the issue, just like they aren't doing so with India now. It's kind of what the WHO is for....assessing procedures based on a country's resources. They are referees, they don't intervene. WHO doesn't monitor other countries' governance either.

The rest is all conspiracy theory. I could write virtually identical theories questioning the United states' role in all of this, and the benefits to them. It'll be just as valid as all your "evil china communist bad guy" argument. And before you come at me waving your american flag, yes, America has lied, hidden, and "suppressed" much worse in the past. and no amount of screaming from the so called "free" corporate-funded media changed the outcome.

You can buy into it If you like, but it doesn't add up. And its still prejudiced.

At critical moments, officials chose to put secrecy and order ahead of openly confronting the growing crisis to avoid public alarm and political embarrassment.”

Importantly, China failed to expeditiously share information with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the novel coronavirus. For example, China waited until Feb. 14, nearly two months into the crisis, before it disclosed that 1,700 healthcare workers were infected. Such information on the vulnerability of medical workers is essential to understanding transmission patterns and to devise strategies to contain the virus. The experts at WHO were stymied by Chinese officials for data on hospital transmissions. China’s failure to provide open and transparent information to WHO is more than a moral breakdown. It is also the breach of a legal duty that China owed to other states under international law, and for which injured states — now numbering some 150 nations — may seek a legal remedy.

Unfortunately, China’s evasions are part of the autocratic playbook, repeating its obstruction of information that worsened the SARS crisis 18 years earlier. In that case, China tried to cover up the SARS epidemic, which led WHO member states to adopt the new International Health Regulations in 2005. In both cases, China and the world would have been spared thousands of unnecessary deaths had China acted forthrightly and in accordance with its legal obligations. Although China’s public health system has been modernized, observed Jude Blanchette, head of China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, its political system has regressed.

Quote

As one of the 194 states party to the legally binding 2005 International Health Regulations, China has a duty to rapidly gather information about and contribute to a common understanding of what may constitute a public health emergency with potential international implications. The legally binding International Health Regulations were adopted by the World Health Assembly in 1969, to control six infectious diseases: cholera, plague, yellow fever, smallpox, relapsing fever, and typhus. The 2005 revision added smallpox, poliomyelitis due to wild-type poliovirus, SARS, and cases of human influenza caused by a new subtype, set forth in the second annex.

Article 6 of the International Health Regulations requires states to provide expedited, timely, accurate, and sufficiently detailed information to WHO about the potential public health emergencies identified in the second annex in order to galvanize efforts to prevent pandemics. WHO also has a mandate in Article 10 to seek verification from states with respect to unofficial reports of pathogenic microorganisms. States are required to provide timely and transparent information as requested within 24 hours, and to participate in collaborative assessments of the risks presented. Yet China rejected repeated offers of epidemic investigation assistance from WHO in late January (and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in early February), without explanation. The Washington Post concluded in a story on Feb. 26 that China “was not sending details that WHO officials and other experts expect and need.”

Yea like the failures started with trump, with no mention of how previous administrations of obama bush and Clinton were blind to Chinese trade surplus of roughly 250 billion plus every year. Atleast trump called them out and started imposing tariffs to show the Chinese that he is not going to let things go on like they have for past 30 years

Considering the 'Chinese virus' has only been known since late last year, I'd say yes the failures to act and the misinformation Trump spread lies with Trump. Strange how you people have moved away from 'Democratic hoax', what happened there? Maybe 'Chinese virus' is a distraction from what he originally called it.

If you want to discuss Chinese power in the world, that is a separate topic

I absolutely agree, F*** China with a massive dildo, but while you ignore Trump is another dictator-wannabe and ignore his failures I'll call you stooges out. US cases of Coronavirus are now the fastest rising in the world.

I hope Trump is defeated & a tough cookie like Biden takes over. Having said that, Trump admin is the one to call out the Chinese and wanted a common reference as Wuhan virus in G7. The Europeans chickened out, possibly afraid that the Chinese won't buy their cheese, wines & cars.

As much as I hate ignorant, incompetent, inept Trump, I think he's got a 70% or higher chance of being re-elected, if Biden is Dem nominee.

R u referring to the Bernie or bust gang not showing up like 2016 ? I reckon Biden might choose Warren as the VP candidate to woo those potential voters, completely opposite to the defensive pick by Hillary in 2016. He did indicate preference for a female VP.

The other possibility is Trump using American muscle on China could boost his popularity irrespective of Democratic candidate or ground realities.

Trump has had his China strategy consistent from day1. Trade deals, tariffs, closer to India, and now the tough talk on wuhan virus, that will keep his campaign going. The impeachment is long gone and forgotten and Pelosi list more cred because of it. I think Biden will do better than Bernie with oldies, women and blacks, but as you said in this crisis, I don’t think the country will change presidents

In times of crisis, people become averse to change and risk.  Its human nature, and favors the incumbent.  This is how George "Dubya" Bush, who broke the vacation record in his first 20 months in office, got re-elected for 2 terms - due to 9/11.

However, as foolish and bad Bush jr was, he at least wasn't personally horrible in the post 9/11 response - unlike Trump.  So its not a done deal.  But Trump's chances post-pandemic are a LOT better, no question.

^ yep, more than 9/11 it was the second Persian gulf war & capture of Saddam Hussein that boosted his popularity. The economy was improving as well. Dubya landing on an aircraft carrier with the mission accomplished banner was another level of slick & slimy marketing. It's in his second term that IEDs started going off all across Iraq & the financial deregulation showed it's true colors.
