Iyer is an interesting pick. He is a stand-and-deliver kind of a guy, can look like a charm when on song and can get out pretty ugly when he doesn't get it right. Probably worth playing him in place of Nair even if Kohli is fit.

Yes. It was dhoni who dropped Pujara to play raina in the 4th test in Aus Isn't it?

Even the biggest raina fanboys know he cant play tests but aggressive expressive kaptaan sahab ki soch ke kya kehne. :hatsoff:

Well 1st thing i think the reason Iyer was bought in coz rohit was injured or he wud have been picked

When wud this dragging of kohli n dhoni end in every situation

Talking as if raina was given some 50 test under him, he was bought in and dropped after poor perfomances. HE did well in WI so how cud he have been dropped and when he did poorly he was dropped. So raina test career didnt lasted under dhoni

Didnt raina play under kohli to in 4th test in australia

Didnt kohli bought rohit to drop pujara and unsettled whole batting order......

This useless dragging of other player has to end..............coz its happening just for the sake of pulling someone down rather putting a valid point across

Hang on how many tests has Iyer played? If this is going to be his debut i don't care how good he is or might become you don't blood a debutante in a decider. Which kind of indicates Kohli will play. I would have opened with the ever reliable (with the bat)  Parthiv Patel if he is available.

That makes sense.  But its just a PR move.  VK will be playing - if there was a serious possibility of him missing out, they wouldn't have waited till the last minute.

I just want to understand what is the pecking order for batsmen in contention at this moment. No issues with a youngster like Iyer getting a shot though.

It's pretty straightforward I thought.Seniority and form .

That theory just got blown out of the window unfortunately

What's the point in blooding him here? Whether he succeeds or fails his 2nd test appearance won't be for a while.

If he succeeds and plays an important hand in us winning it will huge for him considering the series is tied and Border Gavaskar trophy is currently with Aus. He might overtake Karun in pecking order in that case.

I remember Rahane making his debut in the last test of previous BG trophy at home. Obviously then we were up 3-0 so no pressure but he was still a bundle of nerves getting out atrociously. Then started the overseas leg and rest is history.

Iyer is at that stage now. We don't kniw whether he'll play though but pressure will be even bigger.

I am a big fan of S Iyer. Have been following his domestic stats for a while. The guy is an impactful player, maintains a high strike rate with 50 plus average in domestics.. Other than Kohli, almost everyone in our team plays in 1 gear.. There is not a single impactful player left in our team who can change the game after Kohli.. I see that in Shreyas Iyer... Huge potential and hopefully should be given lots of chances..

Rahul, Rahane and Nair can  score quite quickly in  test matches too, among specialist batsmen.

Even Vijay when he needs to.Being opener that opportunity rarely occurs to him.

Only Pujara and Ashwin are kinda single gear batsmen in our test team.

Ofcourse then there is Rohit who plays in reverse gear.

Who made the rule that "you don't blood a debutante in a decider"?

England gave Jonathan Trott a debut in the 2009 Ashes decider, he went on to make a match winning hundred in the second innings and England won the Test and the series.
